Is Jerry Clower the one who talks about the cajun who was dared to walk out on a light beam and refused cause " as soon as I get out there you'll turn it off" ?

a little off topic, Jschaaff, but i notice you have hay on your wire, I have my quail on wire, but are there any benefits to having them on hay? Does it make it harder to clean?

My favorite line!! I lost it at that point...

Ravenzero: Hello! I just put a couple of piles/handfuls in there, because they like to play in it and sleep in it. They prefer their hidey-holes (planters I have turned on there sides) and their sand boxes, but they spend a lot of time in the hay too. Haven't had any problem as far as cleaning, they move it around enough that poo still falls thru, plus I change it out every few days.

Okay...Afternoon all!

So I picked up 7 quail today. The sweet lady said her jumbos were 6 weeks old, in our email correspondence, but when I got there, and commented on the size of them, in comparison to my 4 week jumbos, she said oh, they're about 8 weeks old. Eek. I ended up with 5 large, and 2 that look about the same age as mine. There is not a huuuge size difference but definitely one there.

***Edited to complain lol: Dammit..i should've inspected each one before we left her house....but it was such a cluster mess, and she KNEW i needed females...I just paid 3.00 a piece, for 6 females and another MALE... shoot

So, littlest dude is going today... I told our 13 year old that we'd all be havin a little taste of quail tonight, and he informed me, in no uncertain terms..that he will going to bed without dinner. First he asked me if HE lost HIS toe, or had been too small, would I have eaten him? Dad reminded DS of how much I like to eat lol...so I looked at DS with a very straight face... "Dunno...maybe"....

"You're so mean mom".

So then DS said fine..".but if you're cooking the quail, then I'm goin' to bed without dinner tonight."

"Are you sure James? ..cuz you're gonna be awfully hungry after havin' a taste of that quail and then going to bed without dinner..."

He didn't find that nearly as funny as I did for some reason...

So, now I am wondering.. is it okay to just put the new quail right in with my others, or do I need to introduce them in a different way....like I do with chickens, so they can see and hear each other...and then eventually stick them together?

Thank you

ANY AND EVERY NEW BIRD SHOULD BE QUARENTINED IN A PERFECT WORLD... 30 DAYS AFTER THE LAST SIGN OR SYMTOM OF ANY AILMENT. FOR COMBINING BIRDS YOU'LL FIND IT WORKS BEST IF EVERYBOIDY GOES INTO A PEN/ CAGE THAT IS "NEW" TO THEM--- THIS HELPS ELIMINATE TERRITORIAL BEHAVIORS AS ALL THE TERRITORY IS NEW AND UP FOR GRABS

What?!

you mean I can't just go outside and throoow 'em all in together and watch as they calmly form a circle and sing Kumbaya together?!?! Great!..instant gratification...out the window once again

Darn it!

Seriously though, thank you! For now, I split the pen in two, so each group has it's own completely separate 4 x 6 space. I don't have anywhere else to put them that is new territory to all....so here's what I'm thinking:

Keep them isolated for at least the next 2 weeks (not sure I can be patient enough for the 30 days....ooooh that's so hard. Smart often equals=hard

!!!!)

Then, my brooder is 5' x 2.5' feet...not huge, but it would be plenty big enough for them (10 birds) for a few days so when I put them all together for the first time, I will house them in there for awhile.

I can then clean out the large pen, open it back up to 12 x 4, change food & water around, switch out branches for new ones....move playthings and put new hidey holes in...thus hoping they will view it as neutral territory when everyones put back in large pen together.

Whew...

Is that too much moving around for these little guys? I don't suppose (*sweetest smile ever*)...that just removing the center partition after a couple weeks, constitutes new territory for all....??

PLAN "A" WITH THE MOVING TO DIFFERENT PENS SHOULD WORK WELL BUT I REALLY RECOMEND THE FULL 30 DAYS... IF YOURS HAVE SOMETHING, OR THE NEW 1'S HAVE SOMETHING THE RESULTANT BIOLOGICAL WAR COULD GET UGLY AND COST YOU MANY BIRDS.
