Not leghorns but first hatch of the year!
Black Copper Marans, nice! And lovely egg color. Congratulations on your hatch!

I used to raise Marans and they were a fun breed. I prefer Leghorns and lighter, tighter feathered breeds, but the dark brown eggs of the Marans look nice in an egg carton amongst the white, blue, and green eggs. I still have a few old Marans hens in my flock. They are getting up in years, but they still lay fairly decent.

Moved the youngest group of chicks to the building this evening and played musical brooders. They are all growing like weeds! The first group will be ready to go to an outdoor brooder soon.

Love this little BC1 Crele cockerel’s type. He is taking after his mom in that regard so I am going to grow him out. The little hetero crested GDW BC1 chick from the first group ended up being a cockerel, not a pullet, so we culled him. Lots more roosters to cull through soon.

Here are the 23 chicks from the second group split into two brooders.

And finally, the last group.

The next group of eggs are going in the incubator tonight. Next hatch is due next Tuesday.

These are from various pens including the crele project pen, the Red x Buff, Buff x IBTR, IBTR x IBTR, and Silver x Brown.

I'd join you, but I'm still not getting eggs yet from the pullet's.

Give them time, they will be laying soon. All of my Leghorn pullets born in 2025 are all laying now. With the daylight hours slowly getting longer again as spring slowly makes its return to us, they will lay hopefully soon. :)

I have a question for all you hatchers and breeders. Maybe I asked already. What do you do with all your chicks??? Do you have a market for them? Do you sell them to hatcheries or through TS or RK? I'm hoping to do some hatching myself before long and I'm terrified I'm going to be overrun with hundreds of chicks and not know what to do with them!

BlueBaby, I am blatantly and shamelessly stealing this from you to use next year, here, there and everywhere! This is awesome! :lau
Frankie has many of those out. I bet if you hunt them down you can find his happy birthday one, or even your own name.
