Hey everyone!

Just had a really nice hatch! Eggs from 2 different breeders. Some Crested Cream Legbars, some Opal Legbars, and some BBS Ameraucanas.

I’ve banded the CCLs from the 1 breeder so I know which ones they are. However the other breeder told me that I can get Opals, Splits, and traditional CCLs from her eggs. I can’t remember what she said about how the Opals will look different from the Creams and Splits when they hatch.

Does anyone know if there is a way to tell the Opal chicks apart from the others at this age or do I have to wait until they feather out? Planning on selling a few and want to make sure I keep a few of the right kind for myself!!

Thanks!

Jealous
I had eggs that were Opal and none hatched- the one that was marked as that pen for opals ended up being a black ameracauna
Waiting for the sellers hens to lay again to get replacements

I can only identify legbars and cockerels

These look pretty straight forward. The BBS are the ones without the dorsal stripes. The really silvery ones with the stripes are the Opals (males with the less defined stripes and larger head spot). The creams are the brown/charcoal ones (again females with the clear strips and males with the less defined stripes and larger head spots).

I am counting the following:

- Two (2) Blue Americaunas
- One (1) Black Americaunas
- Two (2) Splash Americaunas
- Two (2) Male Opal Legbar
- Two (2) Female Opal Legbar
- Five (5) Male Cream/Crele Legbars
- Seven (7) Female Cream/Crele Legbars

I did this fast so double check my count and ID's

That’s awesome! Thanks for taking the time to label the picture!

I came to pretty much the same conclusion - except the little opal boy at the top of the pick hatched from what were supposed to be traditional CCL eggs (hatched inside a mesh bag to keep them separate) - any thoughts?

I emailed the breeder to see if she may have a split in the pen she doesn’t know about. Waiting to hear back because he’s pretty lavender-y!

Emailed the breeder and she actually has some splits in her flock, so that explains it!

I’m definitely keeping all the Opals this go around. Very interested to watch them grow and change!

Can I ask where you got your opal legbar eggs. I'm wanting some!

Hi there!

I get my eggs from Erin Dawson in Campbellville, Ontario (Canada). If that's anywhere near you let me know and I'll send you her email address!
