Idk what these mites are, but how do I treat them?

Poor thing. That might be from the hen scratching and biting at the itchy mites.

Sounds like you're doing everything you can! I think mites or lice are inevitable even if you keep the cleanest ever coop. These pests are determined! Plus, they're tiny so you can't really tell until there's an infestation.

This article I found talks about how northern fowl mites build “houses” out of dead skin and such around the chicken’s vent. I think this might be what we have going on.

So terrible must feel awful! Poor things ugh. I’m gonna check their vents tonight on the roost and see if I can see mites moving still.

Thank you! This is so frustrating! We’ve never had issues before and I just had surgery so it wasn’t what I wanted to deal with right now. But I am going to take care of it asap! Humans can’t pick mites up form chickens can we?

Thank you so much! That makes me feel a bit better at least. Yes it seems like there couldn’t have been worse timing lol that’s the way life goes I guess.

Do you know, if I switched their bedding out to sand in the coop, would that be better to keep mites at bay? They currently have hemp and while I do like it, we’re been thinking of sand for a while. Maybe this is the push I need?

Aw thanks for the support That is so sweet of you. I’ve been checking every night and things are looking better, but I saw a single mite on an egg yesterday, so I know this won’t be solved overnight. I will keep treating until we break the cycle. Darn things. I hope your friend’s flock pulls through quickly.
