I can't believe what I've just done. Put the thermometer back in the incubator and put it RIGHT INTO A egg thats just pipped! Almost immediately a tiny drop of blood oozed out. The chick is still moving about but I am truly mortified - I just can't beleive how STUPID I am!!! This is my first hatch and 7 outa 12 have hatched so far. The rest have also pipped and if I go in to rescue the chick and help it out, I might jeopardize the other 4. Off to find the car keys and a hosepipe.....

You think a broody hen never stepped on one doing the same damage. Don't beat yourself up over it. It ain't over til it's over. Keep you fingers crossed!

Take a deep breath and relax. I would leave the egg alone and not help it. If there is blood she may not be ready to come out. Remember it may take 24 to 48 hours for it to hatch. So if you only saw a little blood it, she, may be ok. Like you said, this is your first hatch and we learn from experience. Give it time. Maybe you could put a wet paper towel around it. Keep us posted. Good vibes coming your way.

YEHAAAAAAAA! She's out and I can't seem to see ANY damage!!! I can only imagine the blood came from the gooey veiny stuff on the inside of the shell (you can see it'll be a little while before i release my new book on chicken and egg anatomy...) THANKYOU THANK YOU to all of you for being so kind and encouraging.
