if they pip at the wrong end, why do they die?

out of 15 shipped EE eggs, only one hatched! cute as can be though! i named her BooBear. she is big and brown. anyway, the other egg that made it into lockdown pipped at the other end! i had them hatching in cartons, so i just thought it didn't pip. i was going to give it more time in the bator just to make sure, but when i picked it up, i saw it had pipped at the wrong end! so i took some tweezers and popped off a bit more shell and then i could see it's beak and it was dead. poor little thing. i was wondering if i had noticed it had pipped there earlier, could i have saved it? or do most babies that pip at the wrong end die?

I did my last batch in cartons too and had one that did the whole hatch from the small end. I didn't even know it was hatching. My son looked in and said there's another one hatched and I had just looked a little bit before and saw nothing going on. LOL So I guess some times they can make it on their own from the small end. Her little feet were up in the air kicking so I just turned her upright.

I am working very hard saying she instead of he. For some reason I always want to say he. The hatch before I got 2 roos and too hens. The roos start showing color in the comb area first then the shoulder area starts showing bright color. Mine started with red on the light guy and darker one has a reddish glow to the wing and shoulder area. Also those legs give them away.


Here are the hens Not good pictures but it is hard to take them when I can't see what I am doing. LOL

cuties! how old is the roo in the 2nd pic? i just gave 4 of my month old chicks away to the guy who i got the eggs from. i have 12 chicks (1 month old) outside now and that's just too many! i had hatched out 20 and gave him 10 of those when they were just a couple days old. but now since i hatched out MORE chicks for him, i just figured i would also give him 4 more of the older ones too. i tried to pick ones that i thought looked roo-ish.....so i picked ones that had bigger combs and bigger legs. but the combs werent turning red yet. they were 4 weeks old. that's why i'm wondering how old your little guy is in that pic. i wonder if i gave him 4 hens? lol!

The Turken roo there is 4 1/2 weeks old. He showed his comb and wattles early on. I thought that one of the other Turkens was a roo but now I am thinking it is a hen. I have two grown hens and one has a very large comb so I thought she was a roo for a long time. I am happy I have three hens this time with the one roo. The EEs didn't show too much color on their combs but they are wider than the little girls combs. I could tell the were roos also by their coloring. Especially the light one. He got the reddish feathers around his shoulders and wings. The dark one is a little more sutler but those feathers have a sheen on them.

You can see a Turken hen in the first picture on the right. I really think they mature earlier than the other chicks so they are easier to tell......anyhow now I can tell better. LOL
