Hi there. I have been working on getting chickens for 3 years now and there are always stumbling blocks. Last year I spent all late summer building a really cool cordwood coop...so awesome. It didn't make it through the northern Michigan winter as all of that cement pulled away from the wood. So I have started all over again building one framed out. I'm half way there. Lot's of work, some tears but it's happening. I am planning on 6 Cochins and one rooster. I live on 10 acres and want them for pets and their eggs, so I will be able to free range them when I'm home. Back Yard Chickens has been a wonderful resource. Lots to learn, but what a great community you are.

Cochin's are good for cold winters but not so much egg production. You could find a hardy winter breed that lays better if you are wanting eggs with your pets.
