Well, this chick turned out to be very weak. It had been born with a rough naval, and didn't make it. But I have another from the same cross. Its feathers are coming in subtly barred, and it does have the white spot, so it should be a boy, right? Strange thing is, it's smaller than my other chicks, and has virtually no comb development at 3 wks old. What do you think? Thanks!

Sweet little youngster you have there! With a head spot, it should be a cockerel, yes. In a couple weeks, you'll have a better idea. This is cool because I have an 11-week old BW Ameraucana cockerel who will be going into the flock with my Barred Rock hens. Keep posting pics of your little one so we can watch his progress!

Thanks, Cynthia! I was really bummed that his sister didn't make it, but some day I'll probably hatch out more from these two. I'm so curious to see how he feathers out ultimately. Here's a shot of the wing. The barring seems really...Muddy? I dunno.

Update on this chick. SHE lost the barring altogether and is what I'd call a dark blue. Very pretty.

I'll get some pics later. Yesterday I noticed the a bit of tan lacing on her chest, very similar to what a BSL would have.

Funny that it had a white spot on the head, plus feathers came in with that subtle barring, but it's a pullet. YAY!

I hatched a chick from a Barred Rock/Frizzled Wheaten EE roo and the babies were sex-linked. The solid black one turned into a lovely frizzled girl (who's now broody) and the one with a spot on the head turned inot a smooth-feathered barred cockrel with a beard.

I know this is a few years later, but thanks for this short conversation. I have the same wheaten over barred rock chicks hatching out right now. They are gorgeous. Both have slight yellow spots on the head, so I'm interested to see what happens. I will try to post pics for future members with the same question. @speckledhen, funny how we keep running into each other!
