hey everyone I was just wondering I’ve raised my hens from day old to seventeen weeks with organic non gmo poultry feed. I couldn’t go to the local feed mill to get food so I told my brother to get it and of course he got the cheapest and non organic,GMO’d feed in the store (Purina Layena). So I was wondering since that feed was fed to them (for just a day) are they still certified organic or are they not anymore? Thanks!

I would verify with your certifying organization--but I suspect not. I know they allow exceptions for some emergency situations--but don't know what they are.

No they wouldn't be "organic" eggs and unless you are certified organic you are not able to label and sell your eggs as organic.

Update

Hi everyone I just contacted my certifying organic organization and they took in my hens in for a few hours for testing. Luckily, the results were negative on my girls being genetically modified. I was also curious and asked how long would it take for them to be genetically modified. They told me if I fed them with the GMO’d feed for a week they would still be organic but would turn genetically modified shortly after. Just wanted to post this update so other Bycer’s know how to handle with this situation. Thanks again everyone for all your help and input.

According to the Department of Agriculture, the DNA from GMO animal food does not make it into the meat, eggs, or milk from the animal.
