If you have a dog.....

We have a standard poodle, 45 lbs or so, that I do trust with the chickens. When we first got chickens, we were very careful to teach him that the birds were MINE, and he wasn't to touch them. The ladies free range in our yard all day, weather permitting, and he loves to follow them around and eat chicken poop.

He'll also try to sneak in their run and eat any treats that are lying around - oatmeal, corn, etc. But, he's so good with them that I try not to mind (except when he ate too much scratch and threw up all over). He has chased away hawks, and I've seen him herd them back towards their run when hawks are nearby - which is funny, since standard poodles are bird retrievers, not shepherds.

He has never been aggressive towards them, but he is curious to meet any new girls we bring into the flock. We keep all new birds in a separate quarantine area about 150 feet away from the regular coop/run area. He likes to go sniff them, but he's learned not to stick his nose too close. He's been pecked enough times to keep his distance.

We've never allowed babies to free-range, though, too many hawks in our area. He'll lie next to their enclosed tractor run and watch them - I think it's the way they move and the peeping. I have a picture somewhere of him lying in the grass with three 5 or 6-week old chicks roosting on his back.

I have a 8 year old cocker spaniel. He's been raised around kittens, cats, ducks, chickens, horses, goats, and bunnies. He's the best around my four chickens. My little cochin is not afraid to put him in his place. She jumps her little jump in the air to peck his nose if he gets in her space too much. My dog (Bogart) also loves to sniff their butts. Although now he hardly gives the girls a second glance. Too busy stalking squirrels. I only let the girls out in my yard if I think he'll be out there squirrel hunting to keep the fox and hawks away. He's fantastic around all baby and adult animals as well. But he hates other dogs.

Go figure.

PS that's the same dog, shaven and unshaven in his usual sleeping pose.

We've been working with Moxie to make her realize that chickens aren't prey, but I think Shirley made the point better than we ever could!

We have a Sheltie and he's really great around them. He's curious about them and follows them around and they don't mind. We have 11 RIRs and they all get along great when he's around them.

I have a Snorkie ( half yorkie/ half mini schnauzer) named Beatrix and she thinks that my chicks are her babies!!! she cleans them and cuddles them and watches over them all day. I thought that she would try to eat them when we first got them but nope.

I have a JRT/sheltie mix who does chase goats/sheep, but if they're locked up, he doesn't pay too much attention to the critters. Okay w/chickens---but I don't trust him 100%.
Then I have a 4.5yo lab/rott/setter mix. I raised her from a wee pup (unfortunately, not w/animals) TERRIBLE with livestock. Kills rabbits, chickens, attacks goats & cats (hasn't killed any goats---yet.)

As you can see, I've got the PERFECT dogs for a farm.

I just wanted to let everyone know that we did find a puppy. He was 10 months old when we got him. A little older than we wanted but it just all came together and we love him. He is right at a year now. He does pretty good with the chickens but I would never trust him without us out there. He will chase them but doesn't try to eat them. He is a Boston Terrier.

We are always right there with him and get on him right away. For the most part we keep him away from them. I just love this breed of dog though. It is my first one and they are great!
