I would put mine up too and even tried it but then the wild birds started eating out of the chicken/duck feeders so figured I better keep the other feeders up, I set the timer now to remind myself to bring in the bird feeders. I like Bears just don't want them in my back yard.oh yes birds feeders are a huge draw, we stopped using them about a year ago.. our neighbour diagonal from us, came over saying there had been a bear rolling around on her yard outside her kitchen window lol She was told by the ministry of natural resource to inform her neighbours, she is surround by the woods.. both side and back, the river also runs beside her property and along the front, we are more open than her... so rarely do they come onto this side of the road...
We yanked the birds feeders after that morning chat! lol
Here are some pics of mine. Thanks for the suggestion! I hadn't thought of PVC pipe.. here those lovely metal posts run 7$ a piece? I'd love to see what you have done, the lead i had on fence is gone, they sold it.![]()
Here are some pics of mine.
This is their new outside area with pvc poles. It is only 4' high I think they call it horse fencing the openings are 4"x4" but it is only meant to give the birds a reference point to stay in and to deter the stupid loose dogs in the area. They have an 8'X8' shade shelter and their pool and some perches. There is a goose size opening in the fence where they can enter/exit their yard.
This is the coop in the background and their yard which is surrounded by 6' welded wire and ~40'x50'
More close up of the yard. Another shade shelter on the right and you can see the newer wood where I added onto the existing coop. The red in back is a tarp that covers a shelter where I put their feed. No feed in the coop. The taller half of the coop is in the pasture but I am in the process of fencing it in and I will move some of my chicks there when they are older. Its a bit of a mess since the cows moved everything around and trampled some of the vegetation in the yard.![]()

I am not sure where about you live in Canada but, we bought cow fencing (Kijijii) with the 5"x10" spacing and use PVC pipes to secure it. Then went and found chicken wire (Kijijii is great for that too) and put that over top. The cow fencing gives you a good secure backing for the chicken wire and the PVC pipes are great.
Again I dont know where in Canada you are but, have you tried Kijijii or any other classified ad sites?? Farms that are replacing cow fencing with electric?? Construction companies have stuff that they are always looking to get rid of. Saves them on disposal. Home Hardware is cheaper then Home Depot and sometimes our feed store gets great deals on fencing.
Hope this helps!! That is how we have built ours.
