I use small litter pans inside of my wooden nest boxes. The boxes themselves don't have bottoms but sit on a linoleum floor. I love the plastic litter pans. I line them with straw and can wash them easily as needed, although my girls have proven to be very neat and tidy when it comes to the way they treat their nests.

Here's a photo of them just before the girls moved in. You can just see the lip of the litter box over the top of the wooden frame.
