Well, since the PERFECT breed, Delawares, is not listed, I would have to go with Sussex, especially if it were speckled.

Well, I guess it wouldn't matter since there is only one chicken, you are going to eat it, unless it is a hen, then you would want whatever one goes broody so hopefully she will lay fertile eggs(the first eggs anyway) and then hatch you some more chickens.

If you are talking about one *bird*, my pick would be a duck, LOL! They do better at foraging than chickens.

Now if you are talking about one *breed*, I'd pick Buckeyes, I think. Haven't had any (yet), but they seem like they'd be hardy and pretty self-sufficient, plus give you both eggs and meat, raising their own chicks.
