I've used one too, and have one in the barn for the barn cat, and some of the chickens drink from it too.
Possible problems that can occur; roosters with big wattles can get them wet and frozen, and small birds, or adults, can hop in, get very wet feet at least, and also have frostbite or frozen toes. Given a few big hens/ pullets, and plenty of space, it will work well.

That’s what I use! Will not freeze even when air temp was -27F and wind chill was -60F. I was shocked lol
