I have a chicken that is a year old and started showing signs of sickness a day ago. Her vent is hard and crusty almost looks like it is sealing shut. I’ve never seen anything like it. She is eating and drinking, poop is runny. None of my other chickens are ill. I’ve separated her from the rest.
thanks for any info, I’ve never had a sick chicken before. I have had chickens for 10 years and have been very fortunate with a healthy flock

I am not sure what has happened, but she may have suffered a prolapsed cloaca or vent, that has been pecked. It looks caked with hard droppings. Instead of a prolapse it also could be severe vent gleet. Sometimes the white urates can become hard and solid and caked around the vent. You will probably need to soak her in some warm Epsom salts for about 20 minutes, and that can be done daily until it improves. I would use a disposable glove and lubricate it, and insert a finger into the vent to feel for any obstruction, stuck egg, or lash egg material. If there is solid droppings or crust, try to remove as much as you can, then coat the vent in antibiotic ointment, coconut oil, or Nustock Cream. A vet might be of help determining what exactly is going on.
