I have a Golden Laced Wyandotte who’s around 8 years old. For the past two years, she’s been dealing with respiratory issues — mainly a puffy face and bubbly eyes. Even after multiple rounds of medication and antibiotics she hasn’t recovered. Despite these ongoing symptoms, she’s continued to eat and drink normally, and none of my other three hens have shown any signs of illness.

However, over the past two nights, I’ve noticed a change in her behavior: she’s been sleeping in the nesting box instead of roosting outside with the others. She puffs herself up and tucks her head down, which I’ve never seen her do before.

We take very good care of our flock, so I don’t think predators or environmental factors are the cause. I’m unsure of how to handle this situation — I don’t want her to suffer, but I also want to protect the health of the rest of the flock. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have photos of her?

Does she still lay eggs?
What's her poop like?

You mention she puffs up and tucks her head down while in the nesting box - could she be broody? Does she scream at you, cluck and carry on?
