Have had six pullets for one week. Acquired them from organic farm, they are about 20 weeks old and appeared very healthy and happy until this morning. One pullet, who has been laying an egg a day for the past five days, does not want to move. She is lying in a corner with her eyes closed. Up close I can hear her breathing. I turned her over to examine her and her vent looks very large (well, I've never actually looked at a vent before) about two inches across. The area around it appears swollen. And seems sensitive when I touch the area. She pooped while I was examining her and that appeared normal. I'm thinking she is egg bound or has some sort of bronchial infection (just because of her heavy breathing). She does not have any discharge from eyes or nose. I have her isolated with a heat lamp over her box. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe egg bound or a really big egg. You'll want to put oil around/in the vent in that case. Or maybe prolasped..?

Update: She just laid an egg. It is normal sized. The shell was cracked in one area. Not sure if that happened on its way out or after. Hen is still not moving with head down in the corner of box I have her it. Does it take a while to bounce back from bound egg or does this mean she has something else now that egg has passed? Thanks.

PS I feel so inadequate. And just yesterday i was thrilled about how well everything was going, how easily the girls have settled in...
