Hi there from Sacramento, CA! I've been using this site as a reference since my sister gave us four hens and a coop two months ago, and appreciate the scrapes everyone has gotten me out of and the knowledge you all have shared with me.

I can't remember our girls' exact breeds except to say we have a barred rock (head hen), two bantams and an Austrolorpe. We got two more Austrolorpe chicks (one for each of my children) because the one we already had was so docile with such pretty eggs.

Our girls are pretty awesome, and I have so many questions that I'll be posting in appropriate places regarding feeding and getting the little girls and big girls into the same run and coop, but so far you all have prepared me for the destructive power of chickens (we let them tear out and eat the vegetable garden), heat-sick hens (who recovered nicely, then entered an early molt and are back to laying reliably again), and what NOT to feed them. I'm going to take credit for getting the dogs and chickens to get along, tho. ;).

Thank you all for sharing your experiences, and I hope I can be as helpful as other members as I gain my own!

Welcome! Isn't it such a wonderful resource....Good luck on your poultry adventure!

It's an awesome resource, and thanks! Sue, maybe you can answer the questions I just threw out over in the Feeding and Watering section? Thanks again!

I so enjoyed your introduction! Love the Australorp. They are so docile and do so well in this heat. Wishing you joyful stress-free chickening!

so glad you decided to join us.

Sounds like you already know your way around here and having fun raising your own flock.

Hope you find the answers you need and wish you well with this great adventure.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. A lot of us were lurkers before joining. :o) Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. Our children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loved our chickens and made lap pets of the calmer and more gentle breeds (like our Australorps). If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

It's nice to know BYC has been helpful...it is an amazing resource of so much information, not to mention the friendly, helpful members. Feel free to share what you have learned, already you know more then others just starting out.

Thank you for joining us and have fun with your flock!
