I am a city chicken rancher. I had 5 (limit was 3, is now 8). New neighbors moved in and complained about the noise of them and a city inspector came out and sent a letter saying we had to get down to the legal number in two weeks, which I did quite quickly on Craigslist. I guess he reinspected (I never saw him) and we heard nothing further. Pretty irritating because 5 is not much noisier than 3, really, and something like 2 months later they passed a law saying that 8 is the limit.

I have four beloved little illegal chickens. There were 12, but most of them were roos and I very sadly had to part with them. I keep trying to talk my other half into letting me hatch out some turkey. Everyone where I live has pit bulls to gaurd their yards.....no one is scared of dogs.....but I can still remember all the city kids that ran screaming from the poultry barn when the turkey's gobbled!! Alas he's not warming to the idea. But I am definately hatching something this spring!

It gauls me when people get their backs up over some chickens clucking!!! I have a neighbor that has three large dogs that whine, squeel, howl, bark and generally never stop especially when the female is in heat......and this is socially acceptable in the city. I can't be in my back yard in the summer when the wind is blowing past their house because the smell of dog feces is so rank that I have to mouth breath.....and that is also socially acceptable in the city.

But when I tell my city livin friends that I'm gonna raise some chickens, what is their first comment....."they're noisy".
And their second comment is "they stink"........

I have cats and a dog in the house.....and cats are filthy creatures!! At least when the chickens poop, they don't make an effort to hide it or spray it on the walls. And not once has a chicken ever gotten into the trash and spread it around my house.....now that I think about it, if I got some little poop collecting saddles, the chickens would make better indoor pets and the cats and dog can go live in the garage!

We have had the experience of making our neighbors really really mad at us. The one neighbor to the West just hates to see our hens in our yard and being the Mayor had the city ordinances changed so no one can keep a hen unless they have a continuous acre of land. Most of us don't have a acre or want to pay the fees/fines. He is a farmer too.
The South neighbor we had problems with their dangerous dog (it had killed a neighbors cat on their porch) running loose (there is an ordinance against that) and when it attacked my husband on our back patio, my husband shot and killed the dog on our property. My husband went to jail and ended up with two years of probation because when the DA upped the charges to a felony and rather than risk a rigged jury in our small town and lose his job over it, he took a plea agreement.
Anyway, we still want to keep a few hens for enjoyment, eggs and recycling of table scraps, we might have to build a greenhouse to keep them in so no one sees them.
I also got a ticket for public nuisance which was dropped cause I had a hive of bees in my backyard. Thankfully that was dropped.
With the food shortages to come, you would think our local governments would be glad to have people who want to grow their own food.
We also share what we have but have become selective with who would get our surplus.

You have x-number of chickens but are only allowed a number less than that? What's the big deal? The big deal is that you are breaking the law. Period! And no justification on your part changes that.

Look at it like this. If A cop catches you driving 3 miles over the speed limit most likely he will look the other way. But if you are going 10 over you are getting a ticket. The less you have the better your chances of staying under the radar is.
