I'm just frustrated. Frustrated. Frustrated. Frustrated.
Ever since ive gotten home, my hens have been on an egg strike. My son is doing an experiment on how long you can hold eggs and have them hatch. Sunday was the first day i had at leaat 5 to hold for the first week. I also have been trying to set some spitz eggs for myself. I got one today and grabbed the 18 egg foam carton , put the egg in, closed it and lifted it back and CRASH!!! DOWN it came!!! Obliterated every single experiment egg, cracked a spitz egg and I declared the others too jumbled enough for incubating. Also cracked one I had in my shirt. By the time I finally get around to incubating anything it'll be August at this rate!!!:he
Ooops!
I think we've all had those days. I have a bad habit of putting an egg in my coat pocket & forgetting its' there until I break it in some magnificent way.

At least the eggs broke before incubation & not during. Yes, I've done that too! While candling eggs, I had one slip & crack.

No you didn't and I am Glad he is getting better. :hugs

you are going to be hip deep in babies until harvest if they don't sell lol

I have 36 turkey eggs set... a bit more than I need :barnie

Another cornish is try to hatch, but the big moose (from my flock egg) is "trying" to help:he He tries to eat the toes of the one that already hatched, and knocks it down.. the squirt gets up and pecks him then :yesss:

Thanks. Thank you everyone for all the prayers! I'm so grateful my brother is doing better I just hope he continues to improve as they continue to monitor him.

I know he'll never see this but I love you Brother Bear!!

The venue today was amazing! Likely out of our price range though. However they are going to see what they can do as they do deep discounts for weddings booked on dates less than 6 months away that they haven't booked. It's amazing.

Hopefully we'll be seeing another venue tomorrow.

And if the weather cooperates(and DH2B isn't in the fields we will be hopefully seeing 2-3 other venues over the next week and setting our venue inside of a week or two). Great since our hoped for date(s) are in September.

Whoops this should be at the bottom. Oh well.

@Molpet
Did you sense me thinking about you today? I went to BigR & passed by the spot where we do poultry exchange. .... Good times!

Anyway, BigR has a great sale on plants until Mothers day. $0.69 for 4 pk veggie plants - like 4 Beefsteak tomatoes, 4 cucumbers - and 4 pk annual flowers. They also had geraniums for $0.79 each. Crazy low prices!

Wow I wish we hadn't already gotten together I'd have you grab me some. We will hopefully be able to till and plant the garden this weekend unless DH2B is in the field. It may be I'll be planting on my own.

Those are great prices for sure. I need to get a flat or 2 of annuals for my container pots. It is warm enough and I think frost danger is past for our area. I usually see plants at 2 times that price. Bad part,,, no Big R near me:old
I will need to check Menard's advertisements to see if they have something similar on sale.

Same here no bigR.

Sorry, that's such a bummer. I know how it is. Last year between August and I think this last January we didn't get any eggs. Now we have too many.

That said our lavender Orpingtons are now laying in the second breeding tractor and still picking up hopefully. However our Legbars haven't layed a single egg in about 2 weeks. They were originally laying and no lavender.

In other less stellar news Pebbles my 4 going on 5 year old EE hen has been under the weather for the last two-three days. Tonight we pulled her inside. She's off feed but her crop was full of water. I'm terribly worried for my baby girl! She is one of only 5 of the original 30 left.

I can tell she is lighter since the last couple days.

I'm wondering if she has sour crop.

I will be spending tomorrow other than my normal duties caring for her and trying to identify the cause. She has diarrhea mostly urates with a little black and green in it. She's bobs her head around from side to side. It's not like we neck I'm familiar with but I'm not ruling it out.

Still they get a complete feed and she's always been a chow hound. She knows how to come fly up to my arm on command for the best tidbits. This is one of the original things that tipped me off something wasn't right. She would come to me. Actually she wouldn't really move at all much.

She also isn't talking to me when I pick her up. She always talks to me a ton.

She doesn't appear to have an egg stuck or anything. I've looked her over for injuries etc but have seen nothing.

Tonight I mixed up my special go to mixture that I use for ill birds and tried to get her to eat that. She ate very little but showed enthusiasm and pecked the syringe. She then decided to fly off my lap and try to get onto the back of the chair. Which she nearly fell off of and she ended up vomiting all over me. The chair must have pushed against her overfull crop.

All over my chicken hoodie which I was wearing to feed her as well as in my hair and on my face. I think I may have even gotten some in my mouth as I said Pebbles no. Ick ick ick.

If I disappear here shortly someone call the coroner and do an autopsy so they can save my chicken LoL.

To make matters worse my dear Pebbles nearly aspirated and was gasping for breath. I'm hoping her crop will be empty in the morning and she'll be ready to drink the mixture on her own and try some feed.

Never a dull moment.
After putting my special bird to bed for the night I of course took a very long very well deserved shower.

What is it you always say when I tell you stories about the things my animals put me through? @Faraday40

Getting me ready for future motherhood. Check this one off too lol.

Now I've never been puked on by a chicken previously because of course chickens can't puke but this liquid although it looked clear except for some particles that looked like bits of dirt or sand smelled rather sour to me. So sour crop is where I'll begin. Somewhere I should have a bookmark on crop problems.

:frowHi y’all. I’m a new chickie mommy. I’m from Williamson County in Southern Illinois. I’m tickled to see folks here so close to home. :wee

Welcome to the Illinois thread!! I'm a neighbor to the north but have some great friends here on the Illinois thread. Really they're wonderful. I consider the Illinois thread my BYC home. (Partly because I lost the Wisconsin thread when they redid BYC some time ago) but also because everyone here is just wonderful! And yes it's true for my friends here I lost the cheese heads thread. LOL but I've tried searching and always come up blank.

You all should consider moving to Wisconsin!

;) LOL

How many/ what kinds of chickens do you have?

WELCOME TO ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :welcome and Illinois thread.
What kind of chickens do you raise? Also, how do you deal with predators??? I know there is no shortage of them in your area.
There were at least 2 or more members from Shawnee Forest area frequenting here on this Illinois thread. They are not active for a while now:idunno
I'm sure you know where Goreville is. Really want to come down there and stay at Fern Cliff. A visit to Garden of the Gods is a must for me if I'm in the area. A hike into Lusk Creek also fun,,,, If able to avoid being eaten by ticks..:barnie The end of the trail features a high cliff with water flowing down over the rocks. In summer, and when sun warms the rocks,,, water is warmer than my shower at home.:thumbsup
