Illinois...

How did it get to be May already?!?
Well, just a reminder that May is the time for rare breeds show at Garfield farm museum in LaFox. If you can spare the time, it's very worth checking out the displays of a variety of farm animals, including some fine examples of poultry.
Garfield farm itself will as usual have their black and some auburn Java chicks available for sale.
Rare Breeds Show

May 19 11am-4pm. Breeders from around the Midwest display rare and historic livestock. Individual breeders may offer livestock, poultry, and byproducts for sale. $6 adults/$3 children under 13.

I'd put out to a few of us the possibility of a get together that day, but it's commencement day for my daughter and I'll have to miss.

Sounds like fun. Sadly, I doubt I can make it. DD's graduation is on the 18th and the in-laws will be with us all weekend. They're not really "chicken people."

Well now my calico jenny has disappeared to go broody.

DH2B saw her yesterday morning when he woke up but otherwise she is missing. Everything else is okay though at this point.

Blue slate I think has broken but may still be spending time on the nest. She was off for quite a while yesterday but there are no eggs in it.

Yesterday the nari jenny also disappeared for a while. Why can't she just lay in the coop. LOL ugh.

Incubators are full here. I'm planning to give the four chicken eggs that were under the turkey to a broody chicken tonight. Clear them out of the incubator so all the eggs in there will be pure.

I may also collect today's eggs from the tractors and give them to the other broody chicken. Let them both try their hands at motherhood. They've been pretty good so far. One bites occasionally but the other one is only vocal.

I hate to tell you the number of chicken eggs and turkey eggs we have set. LoL.

Chicken eggs between our two incubators(styro and cooler) and the one the school is using. Including those four mixed chicken eggs we have 94 chicken eggs set.

35 turkeys.

Gulp. LOL

Thankfully we've already had some interest and I'm hoping to drum up a lot more.

This afternoon we are going to see a venue and may see a second afterwards if we have the time.

It feels good to be getting the ball rolling.

I'm not sure if I've updated on my brother for a while. I can't remember. Anyway he is home and went in to the ER last weekend (I think it was) as the wound vac was saying it was broken or plugged or something. They removed his wound vac and because the wound was so small they were able to pack it with wet and dry gauze. This can be done at home so hopefully he is finally almost over this thing.

Sorry if I've already given this update.

No you didn't and I am Glad he is getting better. :hugs

you are going to be hip deep in babies until harvest if they don't sell lol

I have 36 turkey eggs set... a bit more than I need :barnie

Another cornish is try to hatch, but the big moose (from my flock egg) is "trying" to help:he He tries to eat the toes of the one that already hatched, and knocks it down.. the squirt gets up and pecks him then :yesss:

@Molpet
Did you sense me thinking about you today? I went to BigR & passed by the spot where we do poultry exchange. .... Good times!

Anyway, BigR has a great sale on plants until Mothers day. $0.69 for 4 pk veggie plants - like 4 Beefsteak tomatoes, 4 cucumbers - and 4 pk annual flowers. They also had geraniums for $0.79 each. Crazy low prices!

Those are great prices for sure. I need to get a flat or 2 of annuals for my container pots. It is warm enough and I think frost danger is past for our area. I usually see plants at 2 times that price. Bad part,,, no Big R near me:old
I will need to check Menard's advertisements to see if they have something similar on sale.

I thought $1.09 per plant was good at Kellers in Oswego. $.69 for 4 is really cheap! I cannot add anything more to the garden though. We still need to plant the salad greens bed, but every other bed and row is full of seeds/plants. I still have grape vines I need to find a permanent place for and sunflower seeds I need to find a place for too.

I'm just frustrated. Frustrated. Frustrated. Frustrated.
Ever since ive gotten home, my hens have been on an egg strike. My son is doing an experiment on how long you can hold eggs and have them hatch. Sunday was the first day i had at leaat 5 to hold for the first week. I also have been trying to set some spitz eggs for myself. I got one today and grabbed the 18 egg foam carton , put the egg in, closed it and lifted it back and CRASH!!! DOWN it came!!! Obliterated every single experiment egg, cracked a spitz egg and I declared the others too jumbled enough for incubating. Also cracked one I had in my shirt. By the time I finally get around to incubating anything it'll be August at this rate!!!:he
