My 1 rooster. Black Australorp. As soon as I stepped outside and felt the warm temp I knew he was going to be in a bad mood lol. He gets crabby when it's hot and he started to fill out his winter coat. Once I was bleeding 3 hens ran up pecking when I wasnt looking lol.
Also he might be stressed from the visiting predators. He was good for a while and I knew they were stressed for some reason before I lost the chicks but didn't know why. 1 day too late. I better double up security to be safe now.
Yeah stress makes anyone cranky.
Glad, in a way, that it was a chicken.
Little dinosaurs love blood

Dumb question: what do you all do about mice and voles? A bunch have recently moved into my shed (or recently became more obvious anyway) so I put some of those Tomkat baits around the shed and garage. Well it never occurred to me that if a mouse eats the poison and my chickens or dogs eat the mouse before it dies, they could get secondary poisoning. Is that true? Better option? I usually just let the mice be because my dogs will kill any of them they see before I see them. I think it was worse this year because they're trying to get at all my chicken feed/treats (which are in plastic sealed canisters) so they mess with my gardening stuff now instead and they never bothered it much before.

I have sad news to report. I had 5 babies still in my xl rubbermaid tote in my garage. 3 were fully feathered and waiting for the other two before going to the big coops. The lid got placed on sealed and latched last night at lock up. The oldest 3 are dead and the youngest 2 are not very well off. I gave supplemental oxygen and my dad says they are eating and drinking a little, but I worry about brain damage. My oldest son is devastated as i am as he was the one who did it. It was an accident and i know this. He knows this, but feels horrible. Two of the ones who died were my favorites which i had spent considerable time loving and taming and....spoiling.

I think it is unlikely but not impossible for secondary poisoning . It is dose dependent . A mouse is small so the amount it eats is a large dose for its size . That and I think the new ingredient is bromilin . Basically meat tenderizer . Causes internal bleeding in large doses . Much like warfin ( cumadin ) the blood thinner they use to use . My spelling may be off .

Thanks! That's a relief. I was just reading another thread and started to worry.
