Illinois...

Ok very useful info, since I am keeping one legbar and a maran rooster. So its a 2 week waiting period before I start saving eggs. Ok so do I keep that hen and Rooster in a separate pen, by themselves and for how long? Well I guess that is determined whether or not the eggs are fertile and how many eggs I want. Have you ever put a hen and roo together that won't mate?

No need to keep them apart . No they always mate .

Have you ever seen a male (of any species) not want to mate???? IMO - If he's old enough, he'll try.

My 1st roo practically raped the hens all day long. Had to get rid of him for the safety of the hens.

My new guy's a gentleman. I don't often SEE him mate, but the eggs are fertile. When he was at that awkward adolescent stage, the girls ignored his dance moves & pecked him after he surprise mated them. ("Better to ask forgiveness than permission," he thought.) Once he matured & took on the leadership role, they started to squat for him. If they do not squat, he moves on w/o forcing them.

Hahaha, so I guess that was a stupid question. But if I keep just him in with the girls, what do I do with my CCL rooster during that time. That's almost 3 weeks. Move him into a bachelor pad all by himself?

I am actually still laughing to myself.

I am grateful there are emoticons on here. Cause otherwise I would be looking for a chastity belt. I have seen diapers for chickens, hats, sweaters and aprons why wouldn't there be chastity belts!

LOL

Believe it or not I use something of that sort on my dogs. Have 2 males and 1 female. All little dogs. When she is in heat, well you know what would go on. I wrap these small soft towels around their waist and keep them on with diaper pins. I don't have any pix of that right now. If you want to see how its done then PM me and I will send some pictures.

Thanks that seems like an easy solution. I think I could figure it out. Just so my CCL is by himself for 3 weeks.

Also got my maran eggs today, went to post office then had to track down the mailman so they weren't in the truck all day. Tracking said they were being delivered yesterday, but never arrived. Checked this am and said Not deliverable and left notice. But I was home all day waiting and no notice was left. Will set them tomorrow morning, hoping for the best.

Also is anyone going to the Livestock Urban expo at the Agricultural High School on Tomorrow ?

I'm not sure (since I've never tried to keep more than 1 roo) but there may be issues when reintroducing your roos to each other afterwards. If they are together as chicks & grow up together then no problems. If you separate them, they may forget each other & try to fight when put back together. Perhaps having them in sight of each other during the separation may help. Perhaps it won'r even be an issue. Maybe someone else can give advice.
