Illinois...

I've been keeping Cuddles in the house or garage since Fri night. She's very, very quiet & looks depressed. Not sure if she'd be better with her flock or inside with us.

She pooped runny again this morning & she's getting a soak now. She ate a little yogurt last night, so I'm going to try it again today.

I don't think it's egg bound (or at least not within 1.5" of the vent). I'm afraid it could be egg peritonitis. Could also be cocci (but no blood seen) or start of sour crop (but no major odor). This is the 1st illness I've had in the flock. All the other emergencies were from scrapes, pecks, or immature chicks. Why did it have to be my Cuddles?

Poor cuddles, such a pretty girl. I don't think its egg bound either. I think it is something you mentioned above. I would still keep her separated from the rest of the flock though and if she doesn't improve after 3 days, I would start some antibiotics. Good Luck

Does her abdomen feel swollen? If so I found this link on peritonitis. Read the 4th or 5th post down from the top. It also has a pic of the fluid that was drained, holy cow.

I have some with same symptoms. Ours also are squawking like trying to crow. And breathing heavy. Lost one 16 week old rooster today.Treating them with Corid. Thinking this weather not helping.

Crop & worming ?s

OK so I gave the flock Wazine in water today & will follow up next week with another de-wormer.

Now for my sick Cuddles:
She's overall stopped eating & drinking. Maybe a tiny peck at some scrambled egg.
She's sometimes making the open beak "yawns" like a crop problem. Also eating noises of her beak chewing (opening & closing quickly like when eating)
Walking very, very slowly. Lethargic.
I fear she's starving, so what next?

Could worms cause a crop problem? Should I tube feed some water with wazine & wait to see what happens? (I put it in her box, but she's not taking it.)
OR
Should I try olive oil, massage & tilt to test for sour crop? (Again, she has no bad odor, so I hesitate in her weakened state.) The crop is flat, soft / squishy due to not eating.

The flock has never been wormed b/c I thought occasional garlic, AC Vinegar, & pumpkin seeds was all that were needed. After research, I'm sure Cuddles may have worms, but I'm unsure if that's all she has. Last egg was mis-shaped & exactly one week ago.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yawns and lethargy in my experience are usually a sign of a bacterial chest/lung infection, I would start giving antibiotic injections ASAP...

Tylan 50 injectable should be available at a local feed store... You can get a limit of 20 1cc insulin needles (two bags of 10) at just about any pharmacy in Illinois without a prescription... You want the biggest gauge (lowest gauge number) they have, but I have found most pharmacy techs are oblivious to needle gauges and/or only carry one size... I generally use the Walgreen's 29 gauge ones as that is what is closest to me, and it's what they carry...

I dose at 1/4cc (25 on the 100 scale of a 1cc insulin needle) twice a day for a full sized chicken, once in the morning once at night, alternating from breast to breast only putting the needle in about 1/4" deep so it's in the solid muscle... You can do a 1/2cc dose once a day but that is a sizable injection for a chicken and could cause irritation...

You can of course oral dosage but I prefer giving the shot and knowing it's all inside the blood stream...

There are several threads and images on how to give the birds shots, if you search the forum...

You also should toss at least the next 30 days worth of eggs after the antibiotic treatment...

Good luck...

Well, I'm not going to disagree with what you are saying, Now lets say we meet somewhere , ( THIS IS ONLY A SCENARIO,) like the Kankakee swap meet , and both our groups were hungry.. So I suggest that we chicken out . LOL, You would see what I am suggesting.. Those white meat pieces hardly have any meat to them. and the drum sticks look as big as some of the wing pieces at the GOOD WING JOINTS... JUST MY OBSERVATION.
I often stop by the live poultry store near my home. They sell whatever you want. They have the Cornish X of course as well as many other types. ( including banties,) These chickens did not just appear from outer space. A farmer raised them and the butch purchased and processed and sold them. There is a profit in this as well , otherwise it would not be happening. So maybe this is the 20% I am seeing..
Can you give up the name of the poultry store? I would love to stop by some time....

Quote: Sure here is the one I mention... I have purchased live chickens to take home. ( pets ) and also a few pigeons as well. They also sometimes have rabbits, Guinea fowl, ducks and turkeys. Bring your pet carrier and take home live.

I agree with MeepBeep, with the lethargy and not eating or drinking there is something else going on. I would start the anti biotic asap.

Anyone going to the Midwestern Heritage Poultry Conference this Saturday? It's in Silex, MO city Park on highway E. 30 minutes north of I-70 at Wentzville and 5 minutes west of highway 61. That shouldn't be too far from some of you in Western IL. It's about an hour 15 min from Quincy and Alton, an hour from Pittsfield and 2 hours from Springfield.
It is co-sponsored by Acres USA, St. Louis Slow Foods, River Hills Farmers Market and the regional SARE program.
It starts at 7 AM and goes through the day. There will be a farmer's market and trade show featuring rare and heirloom poultry as well as supplies and an egg show.

There will be various nationally known speakers. I'll be presenting a seminar at 10 AM on starting right with heritage poultry.

a quote from Slow Food STL

"The afternoon session will feature demonstrations - lots of time for Q&A - all poultry species from pigeons to turkeys! 30-35 breeds of rare and heirloom poultry on display. State of Missouri will be on hand early for free blood testing for birds. Acres USA will also be present. This is a serious learning event- with lots of fun on tap!"
