I hear you. The chicks I gave away for free (with the promise I will get pics back every other week till they are mature) went fast. But no one was willing to pay $15 for pure Legbars so I gave them to a 4H project instead. I was lucky a lady who had wanted the Barnevelders in Oklahoma few months ago called me and took all my Barnevelders, otherwise I would have had them sitting with me. IMO charging for good quality chicks is a way to find out if people really value them or not otherwise they will end up in bad places. Unfortunately in Chicagoland due to lack of experience and familiarity with chicken breeds, there are not that many people who understand why a small chick costs $25-$30.No. I haven't heard much. These day old chicks go for $25-35 ea when purchased straight from the breeder. (Then there's the shipping....) I thought selling them for 1/2 would make them go fast., but I guess I'll be putting an ad in Craigslist. I sold many last year that way. This time, I paid $6 per egg. Many people want $3 chicks like at the feed stores. I sell my "mutts" for $3 & even those are better quality than the poor little traumatized chicks at the feed store.
BTW someone is selling 3 x Chocolate Orpington chicks for $5000 on rarebreedauctions. I am sure someone who knows that value of the new breed will buy them.
P.S. The gentleman I referred to you was serious about buying and is willing to pay the price. He is looking for Juvies though. Do you have any juvies to sell preferably 10-20 weeks?
