Illinois...

Well second shipment of eggs arrived today totally intact. Between the foam shippers which are sweet, and the fragile service, not a single egg broken. Yeah! @jerryse these would probably work nice for long distance shipping to Alaska

Well spring is here and so are the local busy bodies... The distant neighbor and I were both burning stuff today, I was using the burn barrel instead of the normal open fire area as I didn't have much collected to burn, yet the neighbor on the other hand had quite a collection of stuff from all the wind storms we have had... About 10 minute after they lit up their fire the county cops showed up over there, but no fire department meaning it was likely someone just complaining about the fire not reporting a structure fire... Cops never swung by my house this time so no 2 alarm fire chaos like what happened to me about a year and a half ago when I was burning some stuff in my barrel... Appeared the cops asked/made him drag a hose and some buckets of water out to the fire area then left...

FYI opening burning is legal on our lots as long as it's 25 feet away from a building, but across the street is a different story...

Well I know its Spring when the pair of migrating ducks, come and spend a couple of weeks swimming around in my neighbors pool, actually pool cover filled with water. They arrived this morning, and my chickens were taken back when they heard the splash down and quacks! As long as they don't decide to come join my guys, it will be ok with me. I do enjoy watching them.

Well my Little Giant incubator is filled to the gills! I had to order a new heater with a fan to help circulate the heat and help with the hot and cold spots. I had a still air prior. But the new motor came today. Took less than 7 minutes to change out. Hoping it will give a better even temperature throughout. Covered the eggs that were already in the incu with a couple of towels to help retain heat. While I was working on that, my first little SL egg hatched over in my brinsea. SO cute! Hopefully, I will be greeted by the other SL and the 2 Orp chicks that are suppose to hatch today also.

Oh yay! How fun what orps are you hatching?

@Faraday40
We got a softshell egg broken in the nest box last night. I can't be sure but I would guess that it's either Jasmine, Cinder, or Ella's first egg! So very very proud of them. Saw our roo Twitch breeding Jasmine today as well as one of the black orps but was too far away to see which one.

Sounds like my babies are becoming big girls now! Are they still just as lovable?

I would guess the egg is Princess's baby (the white one, Jasmine) Hopefully the next egg will be stronger. Princess is down to laying 6 eggs a week, but that's still impressive since she rarely took any days off for over 2 years. She's 3 yrs old now.

Haven't had much computer time lately. Been a busy week with a sick hubby, kids' school projects, a house guest from FL, teaching several classes, and building a brooder & EcoGlow-like heater... in my spare time. (I'll post pics when it's fully completed.) Anyway, my test hatch eggs are in lock down & I hope to see chicks on Tues.

Cuddles Update: She's back up in the pecking order & enjoying life in her flock. She still has a very firm abdomen & feels bony. She's at least eating & drinking.

@Faraday40 Sounds like Cuddles is doing well, you never know. I want to hear about your Eco Glow like heater. I am going to try something that I found on one of the threads here. Its called Mamas heating pad brooder. Now I use a heating pad underneath the brooder, but apparently, these people use hardware cloth to make like a cave, put the heating pad on top, and the chicks go in to warm up. The plus here, is that they put the chicks directly out in the coop with this method. Separated of course, but they say the chicks feather out more quickly and integration is much easier. Going to try.

@chickendreams24 I am hatching my pullet Orp eggs, could be black, blues, partridge girls, with either Thor or Al as sire.

Here is how I sent the second shipment to Alaska . Bubble wrap egg inside plastic egg . Egg cartons on sides and then a air pouch over top . Medium flat rate box . Arrived intact without special handling . Problem plastic eggs are seasonal . This package was firm with give .

Well since its the right time of the year for plastic eggs, go hit Walgreens, Walmart, the day after Easter. They will have them clearanced out. Buy em up for a half the price and stock up. Kind of a really cute way to receive eggs, especially this time of year! Glad they made it there safe and sound.
