@Junibutt here is a pic of your Orpington's wing color. It really looks solid white to me, which I know it shouldn't, but it does. He has some nice thick legs! So much fun, guessing colors on all these chicks.

ok I found one picture of one of my mauves at 4 weeks old, however none at 2 weeks. I have been told mauve can have different variations in shade due to other factors but this is almost white here. I guess we will check in couple of more weeks



If I got my eggs wrong, then there are several other possibilities. I guess we will have to wait and see for another couple of weeks. I have more eggs hatching on Easter so will have to see if more hatch like this one!

Looks like I need to set up my new brooder today! We awoke at 3am to a very loud peeping EE chick! One other egg had pipped. Right now (8am) we have 6 pips & 1 chick. I wasn't expecting any to hatch until tonight & then thought tomorrow would be the "popcorn" hatch day. Oh well! THEY'RE COMING! That's what really matters.

This is going to be fun to watch.these guys grow out. I added about 5 more Orp eggs with the last shipment of eggs I got. On a sad note, my last SL bantam cochin pipped but never zipped. I should have left him alone, but had to help him out. He is still in incubator doing a lot of sleeping. Don't think he will make it. First 2 are Orpingtons last 2 SL bantam.

You may be surprised how well they bounce back. Twice I had to assist chicks hatched in classrooms. After the kids left, I carefully removed the shrink-wrapped chicks from the shell & the glued-on membrane. Some warm soaking, blotted dry, & popped them back into the incubator. Both times by morning, the teacher came in to see a normal chick running about. Just keep it separated until it's more steady on its feet. Good luck!

Genetics sex-link question:

I hatched out what I guessed was a Biele egg. I chose wrong, so

Barred roo (Bielefelder) x Black hen (black sex-link) = ???
I have always used a barred female x solid male to make sex-links. Will this combo work in reverse.? The chick looks black with a faint head spot, but isn't dry yet. I can't tell details, but it doesn't look like a pure Biele to me.

From what I've read no it won't work in reverse. Sorry I can't give you more details than that but I'm sure someone will chime in

All chicks will be barred and not sexable . It is due to barring traveling on the male sex chromosone . Males have 2 copies females 1 copy . So in this case all chicks get 1 copy from the rooster . So no reliable difference in head spots .

Thanks. That's what I thought. My friend has the bieles I hatched last year, plus some black sex-link females. Since the only male is a Biele, I tried to select all the eggs with speckles. (My Biele hen made slightly speckled eggs.) So far 2 mixes have hatched. There are 2 more eggs yet to hatch, so there's still hope for a pure Biele.
