Illinois...

I would have but need to make room for the 30 something that are hatching in 2 weeks.

P.S. Has anyone heard from @chickendreams24 ? I have not seen any post from her recently.

I was concerned so I called her last week. It was great to catch up. She's been busy (It's spring, so many chores to do) & she didn't have much time to figure out the new BYC yet.

BTW- Only 30 chicks???? I'm sure you could hatch more than that! LOL

I set 2 doz lav & blk/lav split eggs & I got 10 lav orps..... but look at all those cuckoo orps! Guess Brick isn't dumb about everything!

Babies learning how to eat & drink.

@Junibutt
I think I have some CCL x Brick chicks. I usually count any headspots as automatic male EEs, but in this case only, both parents have barring..... so is there a way to tell gender by chick down color? One looks kind of chocolate.

Well 39 eggs still growing but trying to be conservative for 30.

With Brick x CCL you will have choc cuckoo girls and black cuckoo boys. And in case all the black cuckoos got mixed up, the black cuckoos from the CCL should have a bigger head spot than the others (doubled barred) but doesn't hold true all the time.

I have no idea what Brick x EE would be. At least they will be cuckoo but with no crest and possible muffs.

I have a broody that has been hatching chicks out in this mini heat wave for the past 3 days. Today when I went to make sure she had not accidentally spilled the water (which she had) I noticed some light pink blood by one of her nostrils. Before that I had heard her make sneezing/coughing sounds about a dozen times which then stopped. Do I need to worry about anything? Her comb and wattles look very pale (she has not been eating much since she went broody) and I also noticed a small swelling on one side where here beak ends meet (don't know whether to call it a jaw joint or not). Anything to worry about or is she just exhausted and there maybe too much DE in the nest? or too much heat for her liking?

Here is a pic of her today. It doesn't look as bad in the picture but it was a little watery. The other nostril is fine.

And here is she yesterday with her first hatched chick

I've had the pale comb with broodies. When mine look pale I add electrolytes in the water & give a protein snack to help perk them up. The last days are very hard b/c the broody doesn't leave the nest at all, so I'd keep a close eye on her. Hopefully today's temps will be more bearable.

I've never seen the runny nose & coughing, though. Hopefully someone else will have more insight.

Sat night I was very worried about my Bielefelder & Orps. Those heavy girls looked miserable. I actually gave each one a quick dip in cold water at bedtime. I also put the fans out into the coop/run.

@Faraday40 I wish I could take a girl or two off your hands! They are so cute.

The girls in the coop walked through the duck tub a few times in the heat yesterday.. I think decided being wet was better than hot.

I took Poppy and Ginger out of the cage within the cage, and I put a box in with some holes they can fit in with them. Its been interesting. Basically I have learned our brahma is the bully of the group. She does not like poor Ginger. Again no blood has been drawn, but she has chased her. They go into their box some of the time to hide, but otherwise when scared they go over to our welsummer or to the easter egger to hide with them. Sassy and Olive just kind of squawk at them like hey watch it. I think they are making it worse on themselves, they really are spazzy and run like crazy around and around when they are the least bit startled, which seems to provoke the others a bit. I keep threatening Cream Puff if she doesnt watch it, I will throw her in with Pepper and she can learn what its like. Its too bad she doesnt understand me :barnie I am positive Pepper could put her in her place in about half a second. She isnt mean but boy is she bossy.

Otherwise I am starting on the duck pen this week. We have 10 days til the little girl ducks come! This is more chaos than I ever thought I would get into with these birdies.

she is doing fine today. Someone pointed that she may have just scratched her nostril with her nails because of some irritant.

BTW did you hatch any Biely crosses as well?

Well, I'm back after the switch. Still learning to navigate new forum format. ALL my pictures DISAPPEARED. Thought the site was still under construction. Now I see that no more was going to be restored to my profile. My Avatar also was wiped off.... :old Did this happen to most of you, any of you ? I did not see an option to back up my items, but do have my original pix on hand. It was handy to go into pix to use to respond to other posts with easy access photos. I do not see where to navigate to at this time to make photo albums. I only have a free account and not a paid golden feather type.
I have a few new things to share with all here, but short on time today.

my profile pic is the only photo I still have on byc LOL .. I guess the pics in an album came over to an album... but the ones in a thread are still in the thread but good luck finding them... I haven't taken the time to figure it all out either.

@cavemanrich Welcome back. I've missed reading your humorous remarks.

I agree & also miss all my photos. Not sure how to do albums, but perhaps I'll figure out a way to post with reloading the same pic every time I want to use it. Glad my avatar pic of my orig flock was saved. (Taken in winter 2012)
