Illinois...

I had some roses arrive in the mail today. That is bare root rose plants. It seems awful early to be planting roses in southern Wisconsin yet. Can anyone advise me on this? We ordered them and they were supposed to come when it was okay to plant them but we're still getting down to the 30s and I don't want them to die.

Now for the other news. Ugh. We had a predator attack last night before lock up and bed check.

*******Warning this description gets pretty graphic!!

It would appear something actually entered the coop and drug out and killed a pullet right out front of the door. Note: it may have killed and then drug the pullet out.

The bird was intact except her head and neck had been pulled off. These lay beside her body. There was very little blood. We have in the past had problems with fox, coyote, possum, and one time with a raccoon.

Her crop may also have been taken I don't remember to be honest.

It was raining and it seems to be raining every time we have a mink attack but I'm not really sure. We set traps both leg hold and havaheart and hopefully we get something.

We will be building a mink trap asap.

We have seen our mink pick up and carry off carcasses. It also has never killed more than one bird a night if it still had access to the carcass of the first. Our raccoon attack was circumstantial evidence and only quail in a tractor coop were killed. We have very few if any resident raccoons as the area has been cleared for farming. I have only seen two raccoons while living here one of which was the sickly one that we suspect killed the quail that I put down last fall as it wasn't acting right and had no fear.

In truth I'm very frustrated and playing the if only game, though I'm trying not to. Like if only I had locked the birds up sooner but that isn't fully accurate because she may have been killed on her way to the coop. All I know is my flock is terrified.

If the ground is soft enough, it may be possible to plant that rose. My reasoning comes from having roses in the ground year to year. They do go thru winter , and there is die-back on the branches. The new twigs did not start to grow yet. Your bare root roses most likely don't have new bud growth yet.
If not sure, then wait until danger of frost passes. I think its April 15 for our area, but not sure.
Sorry about your hen,,,, :hugs Just try to secure everything the best you can...

@cavemanrich
Thanks for the kindness and the help. Actually it's 5 roses and a couple of them at least do have new growth which is what worries me.

We've never gotten roses so early before and I when we ordered them I figured they would be here in April or May. Now I find out the cherry we ordered is going to be here tomorrow.

I guess we'll just have to plant them and hope for the best yesterday was warmer at least. It's a big company that wevew had great luck with in the past(I don't know if I'm allowed to mention their name) anyway I guess they probably have it all tracked and know what they're doing right?

Your other option is to container plant them now. When you feel it is correct time, just transplant into ground. The benefit there is you can bring into garage overnight or wherever it will be safe from frost.
You can mention the company name. :idunno
I hang out on a Gardening Thread, and they mention the seed companies in their posts, both in POSITIVE and NEGATIVE ways.
As always,,,,,,, WISHING YOU BEST,,, :highfive:

I'm Back! Yesterday my BYC account stopped working. I guess my Yahoo email called BYC spam & bounced the emails back, so BYC suspended my account. After "white-listing" BYC on my end, my BYC account still did not work. I contacted support and waited for over 24 hrs.
:caf

Oh No! BYC withdraw!!!!

So here's my unusual fix - if this ever happens to you-: I switched my BYC to a diff email account & after verifying it, "Poof" it worked. Then I went into my BYC profile and switched it back to my orig account & verified that. Now I can post again!:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy

So sorry about your little hen.Poor hatches can happen - especially with shipped eggs.

I only got 4 seramas & 4 OEG from my shipped eggs. Not good, but considering EVERY egg had a detached air cell & several were rolling, I was happy to get anything. Then there were 3 eggs that looked scrambled - yolk mixed with white!

7/12 serama eggs developed and made it to lockdown... 4 hatched
6/ 8 OEG eggs made it to lockdown... 4 hatched
Yesterday I cracked open the unhatched eggs to find that the detached air cells did not prevent development - only hatching. 4 chicks were fully developed with all the yolk absorbed - but just couldn't get out of the shell. I felt very bad for those. Although I hate seeing how the embryos died, I feel it's important to learn what happened.

Yesterday afternoon tragedy hit: The serama that hatched last night got her head caught somehow & hung herself. Less than 24hrs old and our smallest one.

:hitDD's pretty upset & I'm feeling terrible. Sort of in shock actually. Between seeing all the fully formed dead chicks, the traumatic serama chick's death, and then not being able to share with people who would understand, made yesterday a long, rough day.

Thanks @Faraday40 yeah I was very very bummed. A chocolate cuckoo English Orpington pullet from you was the one that was killed.

DH2B came home with plans to build a mink trap tonight. We can't keep going like this. After last night I asked him if this was starting all over again like last year. I don't know if I could take it.

He told me it's not because we're going to get this thing I hope so I really really do.

Of course I know losses are a possibility free ranging but we can do our best to prevent that and fight back.

I love wildlife but this has got to stop. We've lost so many birds in the last three years between all the predators it makes me sick. If we can deal with the mink and even the fox this year(if the fox comes back) I would feel tons better.

I'm so very very sorry about the little serama. We too have experienced a couple of random crazy deaths in brooders and even adult fowl. I'm so terribly sorry I know how upset your DD must be.

An OEG is not doing very well today. Seems weak & I'm not sure its eating. Trying to get it to drink some sav-a-chick.
:fl

Oh! I forgot to share a fun story from last week (or perhaps the week before).

Here's where I found an egg. I couldn't believe it! It was slightly cracked & could have been there a while..... Because who looks UP to find eggs?!

My guess is that the nests were full, so Jewel hopped up onto the shelf. Then the egg rolled off the back & happened to get wedged.

Oh no definitely try some nutridrench if you have it.

Are you sure the oegb has been eating? Sometimes I find they have trouble with all but the smallest crumbles.

Of course I know you're a hatching and chick raising expert. I hope the little isnis just a failure to thrive.

I posted in the emergency forum but only go one reply. I am hoping someone on this forum can help. here was my post:
I have 6, 3 week old chicks. All 6 act fine eat, drink and run around. My RIR has a discharge coming out of her vent.
The chicks are in a 3 by 6 brooder with a heating plate. They are eating medicated grower feed. They have been give the yolk from hard boiled eggs; and this week I started to offer chick grit other than that they have had no treats.
Originally I had 2 chicks with pasty but including the RIR. The other chick is fine but the RIR has had a discharge for a week. I have attempted to put olive oil on it. All that seemed to happen with that was it caused her to peck at her vent. I soaked her in epson salt last night. Her poop looks normal so not sure what is causing the discharge.
Any ideas what may be causing this and what I can do to help her? rir .jpg

do you think I should cull the chick? Currently I have her separated from the others with a mirror as company. i feel bad to leave her by herself; I have not culled already as she seems to be active, eating and drinking.
