There's a great Windy City Coop Tour every year in September. I did that to get ideas before getting my own flock.

We're all missing yesterday's sunshine and really dislike these T-storms! Because we had to cancel our plans to visit @chickendreams24 today, I decided to make breakfast blintzes (crepes with a cheese filling and fruit toppings) to cheer everyone up.
DS is becoming a pretty good chef and enjoyed making his own crepes next to me. We were able to mass produce them in half the time. The best part, though, was the fruit toppings. We used some of the cherries from our tree and our last jar of peaches from @chickendreams24 . So although we couldn't the spend day with you, know that you were in our thoughts. I hope you get to swing by the Thresheree between raindrops and we'll see if tomorrow's weather is any better for an outing.
BTW- Next weekend is the Sandwich Fair (town is called "Sandwich"). It's a decent fair (not about sandwiches, but they do have food). It has a demolition derby, horse pulls, carnival rides, etc. Basically good family fun. We'll likely attend on Sunday.

On to chickens:
My mod game bantams are due to hatch today. 7 out of 12 developed & looked good earlier this week. Usually my bantam eggs hatch a day early (which would have been yesterday) and I still see no pips. I slipped 2 laced orp eggs in with them & both of those are now pipped. (If they hatch this afternoon, they will be exactly on time as usual.) I really hope some mod game hatch.... but I'm getting a sinking feeling.....
I kept my silkie broody to care for these chicks. She's sitting on 2 of the mod game eggs, but she's better with mothering than incubating.

I feel that I should have seen pips on Thurs eve & chicks on Fri. No pips feels like a bad sign. English Orps are bigger & can take as much as 12-24 hours longer. Now I'm just hoping the mod games are more like quail & can go from nothing to pip, zip, hatch quickly.
I really hope your modern games hatch!

It was a slow start today when we first got to the thresheree many of the out door vendors in the flea market that didn't have tents had their items covered and a few even left altogether. I felt bad for the vendors and exhibitors that couldn't work in the rain. Things got much better just before and then after the rain stopped. One good thing was that they didn't charge admission when it was pouring we have vendor passes so it doesn't cost anything but it was nice for some of the guests I'm sure. I can't say if that's their normal practice as I don't think it's ever rained like this for the thresheree certainly not since I've been going.
For anyone that is interested please check out the Rock River Thresheree website and come on up it's a great time!
Today the thresheree ran in spite of the rain it was fun to go and I even got sunburnt in the face this afternoon. The rain quit about 12-1 pm here today and there was only the occasional drizzle after that.
My legs are killing me but it was well worth it. I hope I can walk tomorrow to be able to go and enjoy myself. Still hoping for some nice weather. Cooler and the sun behind clouds would be better. This afternoon the sun became so intense as to be uncomfortable on my feet when standing still in my flip flops. It was extremely muddy today and I had mud splattered all over by the time we got home.
For anyone interested in coming to the thresheree I recommend not wearing light colored shirts that you don't want soot on. As the machinery is mostly coal and steam powered there is soot here and there a bit. If Its rainy I recommend bringing boots and you'll probably want to wear them.

Do you already have chickens, or are about to??? What area of Chicago are you in?
I know where to get chicken supplies as well as some chickens.

I'm in the Norwood Park Chicago neighborhood. Right next door to Park Ridge and Niles.
I know of a place on Belmont in/near Roscoe village that sells supplies and chickens. That's the only place close I know of.
You're in the fun part of researching chicken breeds!!!! If you find that big, quiet, docile, cuddly Orpingtons are on your list, contact me when you're ready. We have the imported English bloodlines that look like basketballs with heads. Occasionally we'll hatch eggs from other people (like silkies, spitzhauens, sussex, etc.) or Easter Eggers or mixes but beautiful orps are our passion. If your main goal is egg production, go for leghorns or rhode island red hybrids....nothing can top 'em. But, We prefer pets with benefits. In the spring I hatch A LOT of chicks via the local schools, so I get overwhelmed with a variety chicks. In spring many feed stores also carry chicks. They're hatchery quality, but very affordable. Some stores you can even do special orders. There are also many breeders who will sell directly or you can buy & hatch your own fertile eggs for the experience.

So far no Mod game bantams or even pips. The 2 out of 2 orps hatched, so my sweet silkie will have a very, very small brood.

Love your birds. I would love to purchase from you. However, I only want two and they have too be sexed female. I do want to raise them up from chicks. Don't care about egg laying. Want them only as pets. I have been thinking about to different breeds. Orps are my main breed I want for sure and maybe one other not sure of. Im looking for the earliest to be March 2019 for purchasing.
I would probably pull the modern game eggs out quickly to check them and make sure they're alive. Maybe make safety holes in the air cell if they are alive?
