Illinois...

Since we are sheltering in place, I doesn't the whole day at home. Aside from getting some work in the run done, we made homemade chocolate chip cookies with DS and he helped me make chicken noodle soup and corn dumplings (a new thing I made since we are out of baking powder but have self rising corn meal). We are going to try to make some grass hair cups (draw face on cup and plant grass seed in it to grow "hair") in a bit, which is my way of testing the bag of grass sead in the garag while keeping DS occupied with a craft.

I'm came back in around 5pm to cook dinner. I managed to get half the run netting up and all the old netting and zip ties down.

When I first went out earlier though I found a terrible situation. As I started taking the old netting down (it already collapsed and tore pretty bad) I noticed a peice was stuck by two old tires I have in the run. As I went to unsnag it I found Dutchess, our laced Orp, laying dead. :hit
She got her foot tangled in the net and got stuck. Iknow she was fine just the other day when I did a headcount in the evening. She must have gotten snagged on the net yesterday and likely died from stress. She didn't look dehydrated and I doubt one day without water would kill a healthy chicken. Her leg was bruised and chafed pretty bad.
I knew the net was hanging low, but didn't think it was low enough for them to get caught in it. It must have torn a bit more and fell to reach the ground.
Ooh very sorry!

Almost done with idea details for new chicken run. Lightbulb went off and I got excited.
It's going to be 8'x16' 8' high. Essentially a skeleton frame with removable 4x8 panels. Some screened, some blocked, the door, and even the coop will fit as a panel. Then I could move it and reconfigure with all possibilities.
Not sure if I want locks to hold in place or slots like a screen window.
I'm not always good at communicating things from my head so I hope it's at least a little understandable. Was going to order supplies this weekend but probably not a good time to spend money.
Anyone out of work? Stay safe on your virus vacation.
