Illinois...

I can't get the video to upload but her is a picture of the first baby. Hopefully someone else hatches soon to keep it company.

How long should I leave it in the incubator? IMG_20200420_184715735.jpg

Then hatch a few lav orps to sell. Almost everyone on my waiting list wants a lav and a blue. They're always the 1st colors that sell out. (Even faster than the SLOs!) Maybe don't set a lot, but I'm sure lavs will sell.
I wouldn't mind setting lav orps, but it's hard to tell whose eggs are whose. With Blackbeard gone, my lav roo can cover all of them and I'll still get black /lav splits with him covering the black girls.

At least until they fluff up. I like to leave them in there until there's a buddy. Their creeping helps encourage the others to come. I've left chicks in for up to 24 hours. As long as they aren't playing kickball....

:lau I'm sure you meant "cheeping" but I chuckled at the idea of little ninja chicks creeping around the incubator.

I would try to leave the chicks in there until they're all hatched or plan to open it only once a day.

Hopefully someone else hatches soon. Surely with setting 14 eggs I will at least get two. It has been 4 1/2 hours since he hatched and still no friend.

We set up a brooder this morning. The quail continued to cry unless held, so I needed to invent a companion. A stuffed animal didn't work. I needed to quickly make a broody hen substitute on a very small scale using what I had available.

Here's my milk carton mama:

Paper towel and feathers glued inside & out.

There's a heating pad under the box so the little cave will hopefully trap some of it's body heat plus allow it to burrow down a little for extra warmth. It's not eating yet, but at least we got it quiet/content for now.

And here are some pics just for the cuteness.

You may need to introduce the food by placing it's beak right into the food. Also, blending the food to a powder helps the first few days with quail chicks.
Is there a waterer in there?
