Illinois...

Hopefully the Brahmas do better with the CX. My Gold comets are a bit aggressive with the pecking order. Poor flock planning on my part. Lesson learned. They left them alone if they were in the coop but as soon as they stepped out it was like gang wars.

The Brahmas are BEAUTIFUL :love :thumbsup
Thanks. They are the biggest sweethearts too. Calm and friendly. I wish the layers would be more receptive. Hopefully things go better with broody hens chicks. It will be an experiment if nothing else.
I guess it's good I built the tractor for meaties, just in case.

I agree!

Before settling on orps, we thought a lot about getting into Brahmas (possibly dark but the light are also very pretty). We love the big gentle breeds. You'll have to let me know how the feathered feet & shanks do in our climate.

All of the eggs I see in pics are clean. Mine were selected after a storm and are mostly mud, maybe a small amount of poop. Should I consider cleaning them?

Those eggs aren't bad. Have you ever seen a nest of duck eggs?

I'd leave them as is. There's a natural bloom to protect against bacteria entering the egg. If incubating with a hen, the bloom is even more important than when done inside a sterilized incubator.

Shooting for Aug 9 weekend. They will be 9 weeks. Hopefully 7 pounds ish.
Talking to a friend from church, she grew up on a farm and processed lots of birds. She offered to have a butcher party and I was ecstatic.
Otherwise was going to bug one of you for lessons lol. Or YouTube videos on constant loop. :idunno
