Here's a funny:

Met @homeschoolin momma at Farm N Fleet today. (A common BYC spot for fertile egg exchanges. LOL) While there we went inside and peeked at the chick bins. I saw little fluffies about the same size as my quail. I only have 4 quail chicks, so how convenient it would be to grab a few more. It would save me the trouble of raising a separate 2nd batch. Turns out they were guineas. Oops! Can you imagine the trouble I'd get into with guineas?!!

 I bought a bag of feed instead.
:thoh thank goodness. I thought was going to end with " and where will I put them "

Same here,,,, but reality speaks loud,,,, and they prefer to hang in trees overnight. So do guineas.. My understanding,,,, they may move into trees 2 homes over. and further after that :old :idunno

That's about how our trip to the Hamil Family Encounter (at Brookfield Zoo) went.

When DS was 3 years old a curious emu decided his shiny coat buttons looked tasty. Poor kid was crying but that certainly didn't deter the emu. DS was DONE and wanted no part of staying another minute.

Two summers later, we talked him into trying the exhibit again. I explained that he was older, more mature, a big boy, etc. He was being good and stayed on the sidewalk but some other kids were running around and caused a wallaby to bolt. Yup. Wallaby smacked right into DS and sent him flying. The wallaby was going at a decent speed so he bounced off DS and was knocked down too. Both were surprised and dazed for a moment. The staff quickly made sure both were OK. They were trying to apologize on behalf of the wallaby and gave DS special permission to pet him. However DS was not buying it. Now, he's almost 12 and still feels that all wallabies are his nemeses. Not to mention that emus are evil & vicious. He hasn't been near that area of the zoo since.

Back from Spring Break. My youngest got in trouble at school on Friday afternoon and I couldn't take away his electronics for 24 hrs and then take him to Disney so he stayed home with dad. 😩 It was so hard but needed to be done. My other 2 boys and I had an amazing trip that was completely different than it would have been and I am so happy I got that time with them. They are 15 and 16 and we only have so many vacations together left. And I know it was better for the dogs, chickens and lizard to have Gavin here to take care of them instead of a critter sitter who wouldn't have known how to handle all that rain that came while I was in the sunshine! Still feel awful but parenting is never easy...

Now on to spring chicks!! I think we ultimately decided to let Mille go broody and then stash day old chicks under her after a while. I need to figure out what to put her in. The nesting boxes are too high off the ground for chicks to get in and out for food. I think I need to put a box in the coop for her. Will she take the chicks out to the run for food and water or do I need to put them somewhere with food? I don't have any food/water inside the coop now but I also don't want to keep baby chicks in the run where they can get out or be easy prey.

If someone gifted me an Emu,,, well this would be a viable option.

Consider a large dog crate. Put plywood, or cardboard on bottom, (or use the tray it comes with),, make a nest in one end,, and in the non-nested area,, have container feed, and water. Make sure the water is not deep, to drown small chicks. Use marbles. The cage needs to be at ground level inside coop. The cage will keep other adult hens from bothering/hurting your new chicks. You can take complete cage and place in run on nice days. On regular days that they are inside coop, have them near the door so they get daylight. Or provide light.
