Illinois...

It always cracks me up when I hear "downstate Dixon, IL"....Dixon is straight west of Chicago....that is NOT downstate!! I guess they don't have a term for "westernstate" or "middlestate" so everything is downstate that is not Chicagoland!

I'm West of I-39, between I-88 and I-80. I call it North Central Illinois......you know how in the giant crayola box you had a red-violet that was more red but had violet and a violet-red that was more violet but had red?..........well, II'm more north but central!

You might not get it.....but it makes perfect sense to me!

Okay, I just re-read that and realized you have to be of a certain generation

to have had a red-violet crayon intead of tutti-fruiti or some other named crayon that was "more appealing" than plain ole red-violet........but I wasn't drawing on a stone with charcoal..........I did have crayons.........

When I was growing up in Chicago, I thought the state was divided into 5 distinct sections- South Side, North Side, West Side, Downtown, and Downstate.

...........they are "5 distinct sections"!! I spent 25 years in the near and farther west suburbs before moving west to rural Lee County and can say each has it's own "flavor" and charm. I wasn't born in Illinois, but have lived here longer than anywhere else and, like Abe, I claim it as mine. It's a great place all in all..........minus a few crooked politicians, of course!!

It's been said that many other places have more corrupt politicians, but in Illinois we have more theatrically corrupt politicians.
Here politics is a spectator sport, a popular theater- everyone watches, cheers and jeers and pays attention.

Hello all! I'm jumping on here seeking advice. We are moving to Ottawa within the next month due to my husbands promotion. I currently have silkies. It seems that I will be able to start from scratch on a coop and run. Is there anything I might need to know moving to a slightly colder and windier enviroment?

Windy is right!!! LOL Will you be in town or out in the country? Ottawa does have country so stop laughing...all of you. They will definately need a coop to get out of the wind in the winter, plus you need shade for the summers..it gets HOT...like right now...

I think in town. I already spoke to a nice guy named Bill at the city ordinence office about keeping chickens in town. He said as long as I practice good husbandry and that they're not a nuesience, it's all fine.

welcome-byc.gif
and to the Illinois thread!!
And since you mentioned it.........it is Orpingtons.....no h
Does your black hen have reddish gold feathers on her neck? She could be a black sex-link, sometimes called a black star.
With a rooster and Orpingtons, your flock could be increasing.......

They are know to be good moms!

the orpingtons and the rooster were given to me along with the black one. no red gold on the black hen...but then again that rooster is friendly with her often and she hasnt that many feathers on her back or around there!! i do have 2 black chicks that have the reddish gold feathers. i got those for the kids at the local store and the guy working didnt know what they were. but the kids wanted them! two of my orpington hens like to sit. i keep the eggs cleaned up as i dont need any more little ones right now! i have 5 chicks and the other two old chicks in my rabbit cages ....at some point i would like to put the rabbits in there!! lol

would love to find some closer to me. anyone? luckily i have a great older lady that answers my questions and keeps bringing me free chickens!!
