Illness cured itself within minutes?

So yesterday Joy was fine. This morning, she was standing under the coop, doing nothing. She ate a little bit, but otherwise just stood there. I mixed up some electrolytes and went out to give them to her, when I found her happily dust bathing with her sisters. What happened?

Probably deep in thought. Wondering why any chicken would even WANT to cross a road, perhaps.

I really did for a minute. I'm OCD and have minor anxiety, and one of my beloved chickens showing a sign of illness is a anxiety trigger
dear if that can cause an anxiety issue perhaps you need to seriously consider not keeping chickens or possibly any pets. I have ptsd and major anxiety and my Dr has told me before when it comes to chickens and live stock. If the idea of a sick of hurt animal is going to cuase to much anxeity than it would be best to not keep them. Just think is the stress it would cuase of you couldn't save an animal and had to watch it die

Hi @RAsChickens
It's great that you pay close attention to your flock, this way you will be able to detect when something is going on.

Take time to watch their behavior so you can become familiar with each one's little "quirks". For instance I have a Barred Rock that comes out every morning, eats and drinks a little, then she hops up on a perch in the run, preens a little bit and then I see her take a quick cat nap. Eyes closed for about 10mins, she snoozes -LOL Then off she goes (she has done this since she was a baby). Another girl I have, first thing she does is make her rounds around the run, closely inspecting the fencing and ground for any spiders, ants, crickets, etc. that may have entered her territory during the night - all intruders are promptly consumed:drool These are the things I look for every morning - chickens (at least mine do) have a routine they follow pretty much every morning, unless I change something up. If they are not following their routine, then I know something is up.

As for your girl - sometimes they do just stop and be still - just do nothing. Don't know why - could be just enjoying the way the cloud looks, they might hear a bird singing - who knows:confused: When to worry is if any odd behavior continues, then it's time to investigate. I do understand that chickens are addictive:) Take time to enjoy each one everyday, relax and spend a little time with them - once you have learned how each one acts, hopefully it will ease a bit of your anxiety. Anytime you have a concern, please let us know. Photos are always welcome.

Next time take a deep long breath. Then try hard to follow and focus on these steps.
1) Wash your hands
2) Pick up your bird
3) Look for any sign of Injuries and or illness.
4) Put a small amount of food down and or give a treat. Did they eat it?
5) Put some water by them. Did they drink it?
Try and calm your self before resorting to panic. Believe it or not your panic will be more harmful than helpful to your birds and your family. They will sense your panic and fear and in return will be full of panic and fear. It will turn out really bad for your animals because after a while they will learn YOU = PANIC, you will not be able to care for them properly at that point because they will run as fast as they can and will hide from you. Try and remember that one point most of all, your actions and emotions will transfer to them. That's not being a good Mom.

I'm sure its better to notice everything as you do, and ask for info on it, than to see something fishy going on in the flock and just assume its fine like me :lau

I'm sure she's fine though, if it was just for a couple of minutes. I've seen my chickens be lazy all day long and snap out of it the next day.

Again, I'm sure that Joy is all right :D
