We lost a leghorn today from the same apparent illness that took out our RIR in the fall.

Symptoms as follows:

Hen has more pronounced droppings on bottom.
Hen stops laying.
Hen acts like the want to lay but cannot.
Abdomen of hen gets more swollen and hard as time goes on.
Hens more lethargic, lays down regularly, and does not bounce back after treatments of copper sulfate, cleaning off bottom, and rounds of antibiotics.

Any insight as to what is causing this? How can we prevent this?

Our RIR was down and out with this illness for a long time so we can rule out egg bound I believe.

The copper sulfate was to treat them for suspected vent gleet but they have no white spots to indicate thrush. Total mystery for us.

Obviously take them to the vet but right now you need to separate the healthy from the sick. This is a common chicken killer. So take to see a vet immediately unless you are on a tight budget. Usually those kinds of illness cannot be treated and your chickens will die. But have faith! They maybe survivors with the right treatment!

well, i guess there is no need for me to ask dawg, or you wouldnt be on here but i didnt know worms could kill. is it a certain kind or just because they wear them down ??

heart worms in dogs i know can.

What age are your birds? Did you raise them? Did you use any treatments besides copper sulfate? How much copper sulfate did you add per gallon of water, and for how long?
