I'm a complete newbie

Welcome to BYC! Good on you for doing the research before bringing chickens to your home rather than diving right in. Do lots of reading and ask lots of questions. People here are very helpful. Your birds will benefit from the effort.

Also, I recommend you go here and enter your general location. It will help people with location-appropriate answers to your questions.

Welcome to BYC, one thing a lot of people new to them forget, just like for our families we keep first aid supplies, you should as others have stated have a predator proof coop, know what predators your most likely going to be dealing with in your area, and a Chicken first aid kit put together, and then research the breed or breeds your interested in based on location as some do better in colder climates while others are better suited to hot climates, I gave up on planning cause chickens always through a monkey wrench in best laid plans and sit there laughing at us, pay attention to your little flock on daily basis you will notice when something is off as they are super good at hiding illness or injury. Lastly don't be afraid to have fun here and ask questions there is a lot of great people here, with varying ways of doing things but ultimately you have to decide what works best for you and your flock. Eggcited to have you here
