(1) Are you new to ducks / when did you first get ducks?
We got our first ducklings - five straight run - in April this year. For the past several years we have had a small flock of 6 to 8 sheep and lambs on our pasture for the warmer months, but their owner has moved away and we didn't want an empty pasture. We have never had ducks or any other domestic fowl before, so it's been a pretty steep learning process!
(2) How many ducks do you have right now?
We have five: three drakes and two ducks.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We bought two-day-old ducklings from our local hardware store, not knowing their breed or gender. Turns out (not surprisingly) that they are Mallards. We have more ducklings arriving next week; five Buffs and five Saxonies.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard ducks?
At the moment, their entertainment value is pretty high. I found some earthworms for them last week and they were very wary - their food doesn't normally wriggle (so the bravest drake got all of them). We are looking forward to trying the eggs.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Reading, hiking, photography, baking, watercolour painting, sewing, crafts.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
There are two of us, and one elderly dog. We are both pretty handy and resourceful as well as being open to any ideas and suggestions, so we tend to make, adapt, improve, anything that we need.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
We have been aware of BYC for some time, but decided to join when we became duck owners and found that we were going to the site more and more often to find information.
