I'm A GENIUS! Mwahahahaha!

I have some plastic garden netting that I buy by the roll and just put it on top, tucking it under the edge of my plastic brooder bin. I had to do this when one started roosting on top of the feeder. I do like the idea of a lid. It would make it easier to take off and put back. Hmmmmm

I just went to Lowe's and bought some square dowels that they cut for me, and a staple gun...I'm going to construct a nicer one that isn't held together with masking tape and bamboo stakes :)

Yes! she/he is growing in white feathers but there is the occasional black one... i'm really confused as to what breed it is... heres a better pic
the older it gets the more black feathers are showing up... but only a few... there are some on the other side as well
oh and someone pooped on her so thats what the brown is lol

I have a two week old chick that looks like yours. She only has a band of black feathers on the wing on her left side. The eggs I hatched were from a lady who had a Barred Rock roo, BR hens and Cuckoo Marans hens. I don't know how I got two white chicks with a touch of black on them???? All the other chicks looked like cuckoo or BRs.

I put an old window screen over the brooder when I found the RIR sitting atop of the feeder! It worked perfectly....they where left over from our window replacement work! (I never throw anything out...lol...well, that's what my DH says anyway! lol!) )

I grabbed some square dowel at Lowes and some window screen and made them a jail. I take it off at night so that they can roost, because they're so cute when they cuddle together!

i actually have 4 chicks like this! strange right! 2 have a lot of black... this one and another... but a different one has a small black patch under his(?) wing and another has a black patch up by her(?) shoulder. i got the eggs (assorted) from a local farm so i have absolutely no idea what breed they are... i'm excited to see what they look like when they are older! oh and they only have 4 toes... i didnt get any silkies :(

Sorry you didn't get any Silkies cause they are so darn cute. I love my little chick with the black wing. She (hopefully) is in with my four 6 week old d'Uccles and she thinks she is one of them. She jumps on me, climbs my arm and sits on my shoulder just like they do. I keep telling her that soon she will be too big to do that. She is already the size of the bantam chicks and they are 3 weeks older. I have 2 others from her hatch, one looks like a barred rock bantam and the other is white with one black spot over her left eye. She too, thinks she is a banty. They are so cute!!! Still wonder what they are though???

oh my goodness! I would be scared to death to leave a heat lamp that close to card board!!! Please be careful! I have some clients who were raising baby ducks and the heat lamp started a fire. Not only did they lose all the ducks, they lost everything in their apartment (and the apartment!)

ps im an insurance agent

I have a hen, but my friend keeps her for me, and what she did was when she was home, every once in a while, she'd take the top off the cage/pen and check on them. Otherwise she'd keep the lid on. don't know what it was made out of though...
