I have wanted to have chickens for years - fell in love with them at county fairs. I bought and read several books about keeping chickens and read backyard chicken magazines regularly for 2 years before I made the plunge so I would know what I was doing. I bought my first 4 chickens from a feed store near us 2 1/2 years ago. 2 Barred Rocks and 2 Rhode Island Reds

We lost one of our Rhode Island Reds to a hawk when they were 1 year old so we bought a rooster (Welsummer) and 3 more hens (2 Cream Leg Bars and 1 Welsummer) so our girls would have a defender. He's done a great job too!

BackYardChickens was one of the first resources I checked out when doing my research in preparation to beginning my chicken adventure

In addition to chickens I also love to garden, read, and watch sports (baseball and football)

My wonderful husband Ron does the bulk of taking care of the chickens and loves them just as much as I do! Whenever we go to the grocery he's always looking for treats to bring home to them (cantaloupe, cherry tomatoes, grapes, etc.). we are retired so we have lots of time to enjoy our babies!

G’Day from down under Mary :frow Welcome!

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your Rhode Island Red :(

I also hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
