Guess I jumped the gun yesterday and posted a question before introducing myself as a new member.
I was given 6 older hens who came with the place I moved into in late 2018. I was told the two youngest were 4 or 5 years old at that time and the others older.
I'd never had chickens before and was excited to have the new experience of bonding with these six "henny girls" as I call them. I just LOVE them! They make me laugh, are so entertaining, and at least one or two of them still lay an egg every day or two. I've been reading up on chicken care through this year and a half of having these hens to care for and also asking questions of neighbors who have chickens. I know I'm spoiling these "girls" just like I have spoiled all the precious cat companions I've had throughout my life. It's my job! The hens seem healthy and happy.
Unfortunately, since these hens were all adults - and somewhat older adults at that - they have not "warmed up" to me in a cuddly sense. If I reach out to touch any of them, they turn and run out of reach. Just one of them, the one Rhode Island Red in the flock, isn't as stand-off-ish as the other hens and that is because she got used to my stroking her and chatting with her when she has been broody (which has been kind of a lot of the time). Many timesI have picked her up off of the favorite nest in the coop and taken her outside to join the rest of the girls, so she's not quite as much of a scaredy cat (well, hen) as the other 5.
That's all for now from Hennygirlsfriend!

Hi and welcome to BYC! It's so nice to meet you! :frow
You can get your ladies to warm up to you, but it can take a little while. Spend as much time with them as you can, just sitting with them. (Watching my flock scratch around is my favorite pastime) And treats do help, chickens love goodies. 😄
