I currently have 8 chicks. 2 Black Australorps, 2 RIR, 2 Light Brahmas and 2 Barred Rock. They are currently 3 weeks old and I have them in a long rectangle plastic storage bin with a red heat lamp. I'm super excited to start this adventure. My hubby and I are getting the coop ready and fencing in our back yard. We are installing 2 motion flood lights because we live in "The Swamps" in Deland Florida. We have bears, raccoons, birds of prey, etc. here.
We are also going to install the red flashing light devices to try to deter those predators. I have been reading these forums since we got the chicks and am now addicted.
I'm raising the chickens for their eggs and for amusement.

Sounds like your off to a great start! Good luck raising your flock and welcome to byc !

G’Day from down under Broncomadness :frow Welcome and Congratulations!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has a Learning Centre and also Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. I definitely recommend the ToW for you at this stage as it has discussions on Predators, kitting out the coop, etc etc.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!

Welcome to the best place to be for all things chicken. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would become addicted to...you guessed it, CHICKENS. Over my life I have always loved and owned a variety of animals, except chickens. If only I had known, those little feathery boogers would have been added to my love and ownership list. Long story short, I’m glad I know now.
Their eggs are better than any you can buy and their antics go on and on and on.
We are all glad to have you here. :frow

:welcome:celebrate

Glad you're here !

A must have for your poultry is a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/suggestions-for-a-first-aid-kit.1150128/)
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...-there-and-cut-more-holes-in-your-coop.47774/) Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it!

One last thing, if you're into gardening, feel free to join this years SEED SWAP (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/seed-swap.1220129/)
