I'm counting the days 'til I get to go pick up my first chicks! I'm so excited. I'm trying to compile a list of all the supplies I need to make them feel right at home. I've been on the BYC forum hours at a time getting all the info I need. Quick question though, when I pick up the chicks from the feed store will they need shots? I plan to give them medicated feed, but will they need vaccines to prevent diseases?

from Ohio! When we've ordered our chicks from hatcheries, we've only had them vaccinated against Marek's. We fed them the medicated starter and

haven't had any major problems so far. Going on two years so I can't speak for those who have had chickens longer.

The hatchery gives them the vaccines I would ask the feed store if they were given to them. I ordered 50 20 will get vaccinces since they will go to fair 30 will not they are being housed in a different coop and are meat birds.

Just get medicated feed for cocci. Marekʻs shots are good if they are going to be exposed to other chickens. They work like polio shots by giving them some dead cells to build up their immunity. But the hatchery does it, not the feed store.
