My chicken free range all the time and they still need feed pellets to get enough food to produce eggs and not get too thin. Yes do the pebbles or marbles in the water dish for the first week for babies. Chickes tend to try to drown themselves for some reason. I put my new chicks on newspaper as bedding and put their food on the paper so they can scratch at it cause that is what instinct tells them to do. If you put them on shavings they will eat the shaving and you will waste alot of food getting lost in the bedding. I have a box that my local newspaper fits in perfect. I put the whole paper in it then every few days roll up the top paper and throw it out. It works great!!! They need different feed depending on their age. So get the right food for the age of your birds. Broody hens will lay a nest of eggs over a week or so then sit on the whole nest. They dont know which ones are fertile or developing. What hatches hatches and they will leave the rest in the nest.
