Hello all, I'm a first time chicken owner and am already in love with them! Our family lives in Connecticut and we have 5 girls who are now 5 weeks old. The coop is built, but not the outdoor run yet, so we'll have to keep them on the sun porch for another week or two until that's done. We want to do it right because I'm terrified something will eat one of the babies! Hardware cloth is SO expensive to build the outdoor run. Any other suggestions for wire? Thanks!

I had 1st used chicken wire, neighbor's dog gave me a scare and now I have hardware cloth and an electric fence around the whole thing. I know how you feel. These are my 1st chicks. I have 8 white silkies that are spoiled rotten cause they are so gentle.

I used welded wire fence and lined it with chicken wire and a cinderblock apron. Haven't had any problems with it yet, but I am in the suburbs, coops in a fenced yard, and we have dogs.

Don't skimp on quality construction. Hardware cloth is expensive but is about the only thing that will keep raccoons and possums out of the coop.

I'm not sure how to do an electric fence without it hurting the chickens...how far from the coop and run do you put it?
