I'm doing it no matter what DH says. BUT I have a question

I buildt this the other day. It may not be big enough for 30 chicks, but you get the idea.
The light can be suspended from the wire and adjusted up and down changing the temperature. The light can then be put on top of the wire as they get bigger and the temperature is lowered.

I will be using smaller feeders..these were just examples. I have used rubber shelving material on the bottom. It will give them a non-slip surface and it is washable. This unit is on wheels.

Ooooh! That sounds almost boy-proof! I had no idea! Thanks for the tip!

Shelly

well, i have a 9 yr old boy, and it's 'resisted' him....no prob, it was actually DH's idea. he was in the light bulb isle and apparently, a 'light bulb' went off over his head! shatter resistant and not as hot as the heat lamps.

i find the heat lamps to be TOO warm. that's just me.

hope this helps!

I love using the plastic tubs...but this is the taz ma hal of plastic tub brooders!!!

How'd you put the wheels on it??

I start them out in a plastic tub (rubbermaid, whatever brand ya choose) then I had to put them into a used baby playpen with wire top - I got it at a yard sale this last summer just for that purpose.

It is working out great. If you have them in a colder area, you may want to wrap the sides with something to help hold in heat. Mine are in my sewing room (which has now become the Hatchery) so it is warmer in there than it would be in a basement.

I just put hardware cloth (1/2 inch) on top. It is stiff enough to hold up and not droop down into the pen.

eta - I love this because when I am done with it I can fold it up and put it in the tack barn for storage.

The playpen is a FABULOUS idea! I used to raise potbellied pigs and put them in a playpen to housebreak them.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that is sharing my sewing room with chicks ;-)

, I am thinking I need to put another cage in there - I have 15 eggs in the bator now, due to hatch next weekend.

I need another play pen.....

eta - I have Puppy Training pads under some hay in there, but wood shavings for a top layer would work also. The puppy pads are to absorb any water spilled, or wet poo, and they have baking soda, to help keep down a the smell a little.

Howdy!

It comes like that at Target. It is 90-quart storage box w/wheels.

I'm about to put coturnix quail (10 days old mostly feathered) in the horse tank in the round top, was looking for ideas. I thought about a 2 ft piece of carpet around it but not this, thanks for the idea.
You could easily wrap the sides and bottom with that silver reflectix (looks like bubblewrap) insulation if you want to keep it from losing as much heat.
