I'm doing it no matter what DH says. BUT I have a question

I use the dryer or washer cardboard containers from a local appliance store when I have lots of chicks to brood out in the garage. You can slit a slide of each box, fit them together and make them bigger. I just tape the sides to hold.

This last spring - first time brooding - I used a refrigerator box for 10 day old chicks - was a bit of overkill.

Thanks for all the idea's. I love them all. If I put them in a playpen I could keep them upstairs. I may need two of them. Or if I use the boxes I could do that to. My daughter may have a playpen. I don't know if she will let me use it for chickens. But I give her eggs so maybe.

I allways check my eggs when we are eating them to see if they are fertile and maybe half are. So I may end up with 20, I'm hoping.

We only have horse buckets around here so I can't use that. I may be able to get a cow waterer. Is that how you spell it.

Now I'm going to check out the site Buster is showing me.

Thanks for all your help everyone. I'm getting eggcited.

I used a wire dog kennel. I wrapped the whole thing in hardware cloth to keep everything and everybody in and to keep the cat out. It worked great for my 17 for the first four weeks. It was warm enough then to move them outside. I'm not sure they would have fit in it much longer than another week though.
Good luck!

I buildt this the other day. It may not be big enough for 30 chicks, but you get the idea.
The light can be suspended from the wire and adjusted up and down changing the temperature. The light can then be put on top of the wire as they get bigger and the temperature is lowered.

I will be using smaller feeders..these were just examples. I have used rubber shelving material on the bottom. It will give them a non-slip surface and it is washable. This unit is on wheels.

I think I will be needing to leave them in the house for 3 months, at least until March. It is so cold outside, I think it's 24 right now.

I do have a shed I could put them in when it gets warmer. I can run cords out to it for a heat lamp.

Now I'm going to see how many playpens and box's I can find. LOL

) I think dh thought my chicken days were done until one day when we can have a farm.

WRONG-O!! Banties can live in the house! We may not be able to keep them outdoors full time because of dang ordinances, but I sure can keep a few indoors for pets.

Like on poster on another thread said....the difference in having an indoor pet chicken and a huge parrot.....$3000!

I raised Zebra Finches for years, had 3 six foot long flight cages in my dining room - so why not have chickens?

I have button quail in a tank, right now - much quieter than that many Zebra Finches

Well I looked at my Calendar and I was going to put them in on Wednesday but then 21 days would be the first and I'm going to Delaware. Now I need to wait a week so the eggs went back in the freg. I'll start saving again on Sunday. I think DH could watch them for a couple of days, this way they don't hatch while Im' not here and I have a week longer to think about where I'll put them.

I'm also having a family Christmas dinner on Sunday and there may be about 15 to 20 kids here

so I guess it's better if I wait until after Sunday.
