ok why dont you check your local craigs list for a used dog run or dog house from there we can help you build a coop and run. I just picked one up for $30 and I am in NYC so things are more expensive here. Try findingone that can be delivered to you if you dont have an adult with a truck to pick it up.

you see once you have a place to start building off of it will be easy and you wont need many tools or adult help.

magine if ya parents gave up when ya cried when you was a baby and wouldnt stop,,, i wonder if they screamed from the front porch,, " if someone doesnt help me NOW,, im done with this kid"

so do you often pull the "i'll hold my breathe" thing on them?? does saying your leaving to a community that cares for each other really make you feel good?
and i am in no way "bashing" you,,, if i were, i would remind you of your post that you BASHED your worthless parents,,,,,,,,,,, now MOST of us here CARE bout our birds, we may eat, sell, and use them as egg makers,,, but we CARE bout them,, and we find it hard to help people that sound like they DONT,, specially if that "person" bash's their own parents,,, what must they think bout birds...........
now to own birds and CARE for them,, you must be respectful to them,,, and you will get HUGE amounts of "pleasure" out of them,,, can you respect a bird, if you dont even respect the people that are here to help?

start over,, say your apologize to the people who ARE trying to help, show them some respect, and i bet you'll find that you'll be overcome with info.

if you cant find the coop you want,, look for a doghouse plan. and convert.

Hey there!

It sounds like you're already getting some good advice.

So you've narrowed down your situation...

(a) You're going to have to construct the coop yourself.

(b) You don't have a lot of money to purchase materials.

(c) You depend on your parents for transportation (so you'd need their help to go get materials, etc.)

(d) You want a coop for twelve bantam chickens.

(e) You don't have a lot of construction skills, but you want the coop to look good.

You're facing a lot of challenges; no wonder you're frustrated! How are you thinking you're going to overcome each of these problems? It might be best to think through each of them one at a time.

On top of that, you really need to make sure you have your parents' permission to build a coop and raise chickens. Are they supportive of your plan? Will they drive you to places to work odd jobs to raise money for materials for the coop and food for the chickens?

If you go to your local feed stores...SOMETIMES they will allow you to take and use wooden flats that they use to transport goods on. These are cheap...AND durable.

If you're building a coop for 12 bantams, and I'm assuming it gets really, really cold in Iowa, then you'll need about 3 sq. ft for them. You can build a small coop 6'x6' about 4' high. This will give them room for a feeder, water and a nice roost. You will also need two or three nest boxes in the coop.

Begin making some sketches on paper with those dimensions. Decide where you will put everything. You need a small door for the hens to come into the coop. It will also need ventilation at the top for heat & smells to leave the coop. This would be something open that you can close in winter storms perhaps, with hardware cloth over it. The hardware cloth heavy screen with small 1X1" square holes in it. No predators will be able to get into the coop. You will also need some window type openings that you can cover with hardware cloth or heavy, small holes, chicken wire. You don't want any kind of animal to get in that can hurt your chickens.

If you make it 4' high, you will want to raise it up on sturdy legs.. 4x4" posts. And you will need a wooden floor, and a slanted roof of some type to keep the water/snow off and out of the coop.

Try sketching out some ideas on paper.
