I'm done with quail

I will ask and see what can be done. I'm terribly sad over the loss, some of those chicks were BEAUTIFUL and I had really looked forward to setting them up in groups.

Sigh.

I'll update you guys if I find anything out. I'm sure its not a problem on your end shelley, at all. Those chicks were healthy and beautiful. If I start over, expect a PM from me wanting more.

Two thoughts:

1. were they in the house, and how close to the kitchen?

2. do you cook in nonstick pans?

When non-stick coatings get too hot they give off a gas that kills birds. I had to swap to all steel or cast iron last spring after a brooder die off.

Good thought saddina! I haven't killed any chicks (they are in a closed bedroom on the other end of the house), but I did unfortunately kill my very favorite budgie with teflon pan overheat before....that was just awful! One minute he was just fine, cheeping away, and the next he was lying on the floor of the cage

Yes, in the house, but pretty far from the kitchen. Other side of the house, in a closed room.

And I hate nonstick pans. I have stainless steel pots/pans.

Definitely a good thought though, what with teflon fumes being toxic to birds.

Nope. We just moved into this house.

ETA: The EE chicks are in the same room though, along with my ball pythons and bearded dragon.

Well I can rule out genetics, I just hatched shelly eggs, and no losses besides 1 chich who managed to drown in a finch waterer (seriously that takes work!).

That silly bugger!

I totally agree, I don't think it was genetic. Something just went wrong on my end.

Maybe next time...

I think it's probably a disease problem rather than genetic, since they were fine at a week old. As you know, disease organisms can penetrate the egg shell, so you need to keep the eggs clean and as sanitary as possible after laid and when stored, as well as during incubation. Incubator should be sterilized between hatches, if possible...
